Beavers Battle #1 PSU in Front of Record Crowd
January 05, 2024 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The 16th-ranked Oregon State wrestling team battled the nation's top team, Penn State, in front of a wrestling-record crowd of 8,540 inside Gill Coliseum for the home opener.
Penn State (3-0, 0-0 B1G) held the hosts off the scoreboard until the night's eighth bout at 184 when No. 6 Trey Munoz of the Beavs (4-2, 1-0 Pac-12) stunned second-ranked Bernie Truax of PSU.
Munoz energized the record raucous crowd when he seized momentum with the bout's first takedown for the 3-0 lead. Despite consecutive escapes for the three-time All-American, Munoz held him at bay to clinch the decision at 5-2.
Cleveland Belton (141) and Isaiah Crosby (157) lost heartbreaking decisions late to the Nos. 2 and 1 opponents, respectively. Beau Bartlett halted Belton's upset bid with a late escape in regulation before the decisive takedown for the 8-5 win. Levi Haines quelled Crosby's chance with a late takedown and a riding time point to clinch the 10-8 win at decision.
Travis Wittlake (174), Justin Rademacher (197) and Boone McDermott (HWT) also battled the nation's top competitor in their respective bouts.
Oregon State will take a week off from competition before closing the home slate against Pac-12 foe Cal Poly on January 19. The first bout's time is still to be determined.
