Second Half Surge Leads to Win Over Cal Poly
January 19, 2024 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Trailing by an 11-7 margin at the dual's intermission, the 16th-ranked Oregon State wrestling team won four of the contest's last five bouts to take the home finale over Cal Poly by a 21-17 score on Friday night.
Kekana Fouret (165) and No. 4 Trey Munoz (184) used major decisions to help complete the second half comeback while No. 13 Matthew Olguin (174) won at decision and No. 28 Justin Rademacher followed with a 4-1 win in sudden victory for OSU (5-2, 2-0 Pac-12).
The dual's first four duals were evenly split with wins by decision (No. 16 Brandon Kaylor (125)) and a major (No. 23 Cleveland Belton (141)) as Cal Poly countered with wins at 133 and 149 to make it 7-7.
Cal Poly took their final lead of the night when No. 32 Legend Lamer defeated Isaiah Crosby by major decision at 157 before the break.
Fouret – wrestling up a class – racked up the points early and often opposite Michael Goldfeder for the shutout win. After leading by just three after one, he exploded in the last two frames with identical four-point periods for the 12-0 win.
Despite losing a riding time point to Cal Poly's Daschle Lamer, Olguin – also up a class – took a 7-2 win at decision. He needed just two takedowns for his second conference win of the season to give OSU a lead they wouldn't relinquish at 14-11.
Fourth-ranked Munoz (184) kept the momentum rolling for the Beavers as he broke open a 4-2 lead after one to a 12-4 major decision. Escaping to start the second, he rolled to his win with 1:23 of riding time to secure the major.
The 197-bout featured just one takedown, but that's all 28th-ranked Rademacher needed to help put the match out of reach for the Mustangs at 21-11. After he and Jarad Priest traded escapes in regulation, Rademacher seized control in the bonus time for his first Pac-12 win.
Cal Poly closed their final deficit to 21-17 as No. 24 Trevor Tinker pinned No. 11 McDermott in the final bout of the night. Despite McDermott taking control early at 3-0, Tinker countered for the fall and bout win.
The win marks the second consecutive 2-0 start in Pac-12 play during the Pendleton era.
Oregon State will quickly turnaround to go back out of conference when they visit fourth-ranked Oklahoma State on Sunday at Gallagher-Iba Arena. The first bout is scheduled for Noon PT and can be seen on Big 12 Now/ESPN+.
