September 20, 2023 | Women's Volleyball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team opens Pac-12 play and will head south with matchups at sixth-ranked Oregon and against USC in Los Angeles. The Trojans garnered 33 votes in this week's AVCA poll.
First serve in the Rivalry Series tilt against the Ducks from Eugene is set for 7 p.m. on Friday, September 22 and Sunday's match is set for 1 p.m. Both can be seen live on the Pac-12 Network.
The Rivalry Series is presented by Safeway-Albertsons, PacificSource Health Plans, Your Local Toyota Dealers and First Interstate Bank.
RESUMING THE RIVALRY
Friday will mark the next chapter in the Rivalry Series between the Beavers and Ducks when they meet at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene. In the last meeting between these two, the 10th-ranked Ducks used their home court advantage to take the match in the season finale last November.
Head Coach Lindsey Behonick will make her Pac-12 coaching debut alongside her introduction to the Rivalry Series.
sights set BACK OUT on SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
When the Beavs meet the Trojans on Sunday, it will mark the fourth match played in southern California this month. A few weeks back, OSU played three in Riverside, going 2-1 in the Riverside Classic.
USC got the best of the Beavers in their last time they met at the Galen Center, back in October. Mychael Vernon led Oregon State with 12 kills on 32 attacks and accounted for 13 points.
MYCHAEL'S KILLING IT
Vernon has posted 142 kills through the season in the 10 matches played and double-digit kills in eight matches, including 26 in the five-set match against Cal Baptist, which was a career-best. Her kills rank sixth in the Pac-12 and is seventh in the league with 3.74 kills/set. The New Yorker has a team-best four double-doubles - including two on back-to-back days.
RUMEL'S READY
In just her first season with the Beavs after transferring from Arizona, Lauren Rumel has made an instant impact. The Tucson, Arizona, native is sixth in the Pac-12 in hitting percentage with .388. She's accounted for 75 kills to just 38 errors on 160 total attempts across 38 sets in OSU's 10 matches in nonconference play.
TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK
Three new Beavs - Amanda Burns, Elizabeth Schuster and Ava Pitchford - have had no trouble dishing out helpers to their teammates. The trio all sits inside the Pac-12's top 20 in assists/set. Burns' 4.95 places her at 13th, right in front of Schuster at 14 with 3.77 and Pitchford follows with 3.00 at 20th.
Four - Burns, Schuster, Pitchford and Ryan White - find themselves inside the conference's top 18 in assists. Burns is in 12th with 183, followed by Schuster's 117 at 14th, Pitchford's 63 at 16th and White with 50 in 18th place.
OH, WE DIG THAT
Oregon State is one of four to have multiple student-athletes in the top 17 in digs. White's 131 digs lead the Beavs and is good for eighth in the league. The libero has notched double-digits in six, including a career-best of 24, set in the five-set win over Nevada back on Sept. 8 in Riverside, Calif. Her 3.45 digs/set also places her at eighth. Vernon has added 97 digs to her name, ranking her 17th in the conference.
