Wade Meckler Makes MLB Debut
August 15, 2023 | Baseball
SAN FRANCISCO – Outfielder Wade Meckler became the 43rd Oregon State Beaver to play in the Major Leagues when he started in center field for the San Francisco Giants Monday night against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Meckler batted in the second spot of the lineup, starting in center field. He teamed with Michael Conforto, an OSU letterwinner from 2012-14 who started in right field. Meckler went 0-for-3 with a walk in his MLB debut.
Meckler is the first Beaver to make his MLB debut this season. He did so just 14 months after playing in his last game for the Beavers, on June 13, 2022 against Auburn in the NCAA Corvallis Super Regional.
The Anaheim, Calif., native was an eighth-round selection in the 2022 MLB Draft by the Giants. He played in 23 games in his first professional season, then opened his 2023 campaign with Single-A Eugene. He spent 20 games with the Emeralds before being promoted to Double-A Richmond for 39 games. He had spent just 10 games with Triple-A Sacramento before getting called up Monday.
All told, he played in 69 games at the Minor League level this season, and was batting .379 with 15 doubles, three triples, five home runs and 46 runs batted in. He also walked 39 times to 43 strikeouts and stole six bases.
Meckler headed to the professional ranks after 135 games at the collegiate level. He batted .326 for the Beavers, collecting 33 doubles, four triples, six home runs and 54 RBI. He also stole 16 bases. He batted .347 as a senior in helping lead the Beavers to an appearance at the Corvallis Super Regional.
Meckler is the first Beaver to play under Mitch Canham, the Pat Casey Head Baseball Coach at Oregon State, to make the Major Leagues.
