Beavs Have Strong Moments on IRAs Day 1
June 02, 2023 | Men's Rowing
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State's Varsity 8 and 2V8 both moved on to the C/D semifinals after Friday's action at the 2023 IRA Championships while the 3V8 outraced its seed in its heat prior to the suspension of racing cutting its day short.
Both squads struggled in their early heats, placing last, before bouncing back to earn third in their repechages. The 3V8 squad outpaced Drexel by 14 seconds in their early heat and was the next race up before the IRA made the decision to suspend racing.
"It was HOT today. The varsity and the JV both had better pieces in the afternoon in the reps. It was a bummer that the 3V was not able to do their rep because they were in a strong position to advance, but after seeing some of the athletes need some medical attention after the races, it was the right call. The weekend is all about adapting and improving and all boats are sitting well to do that tomorrow," said Oregon State head coach Gabe Winkler.
The day opened with the Varsity 8 in action in their heat. OSU hung in for much of the race, eventually ceding way to Georgetown and Colgate over the final 500 meters to finish sixth. The Beavers had a strong bounce back effort in the repechage, however. OSU was neck-and-neck with MIT through the first 500 meters before pulling away to place third and outpace the Engineers by 11 seconds.
The 2V8 had a similar day to its Varsity 8 counterparts. After a tough first race against three teams seeded in the top-10, the Beavs rebounded to place third in its repechage. OSU was just a half-second ahead of Santa Clara at the 1,000-meter mark before pulling away for a near-10-second victory over the Broncos to place third.
Oregon State's 3V8 outperformed expectations in its heat. The Beavers entered the race seeded 16th, last in their heat, but it outperformed 15-seed Drexel to earn fifth in the first race of the day. The Beavers dominated the final 1,000 meters, outracing the Dragons by 14 seconds.
The Beavers will return to the water on Saturday at 5:42 a.m. PT with the Varsity 8 in the 'C' semifinal, followed by the 2V8 in the 'D' semifinal at 6:06 a.m.
