Men’s Rowing Knocks off Colgate, Drexel, San Diego
March 04, 2023 | Men's Rowing
LAS VEGAS – Oregon State's Varsity 8 had a strong day in an abbreviated Lake Las Vegas Invitational, knocking off Colgate, Drexel and San Diego on Saturday morning.
The race was moved to Friday night and Saturday morning due to anticipated high wins in the area on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.
"When the weather cooperates, this is an amazing venue. It's a rowing oasis in the middle of both the desert and our winter training. The level of competition this year was very tight. The varsity had two of the closest races I've witnessed since I've been here. It means a lot to come out ahead in those races. A fraction of a second is all it takes for a victory," head coach Gabe Winkler said. "Watching the varsity stroke, Andrew Balsbaugh enter the last 500m with the boats level, I knew he was going to get it done. To race Drexel, Colgate, USD, and the defending national champion, Cal, this early gives us something to build on for the rest of the season."
The Beavers opened the invitational on Friday with solid times in showdowns with defending national champion Cal.
On Saturday, the OSU Varsity 8 scored its first win of the weekend, edging out Drexel by .77 seconds. The Beavs then battled Colgate and San Diego, scoring a victory over both with a time of 6:23.62. It was another narrow victory with the Beavers outracing Colgate by .71 seconds.
OSU's 2V and 3V squads also improved on Saturday, posting their best times of the weekend in their first races on Saturday against the Drexel Varsity 8. The 2V team raced home in 6:12.02 while the 3V finished third in 6:21.28.
Oregon State's season continues on March 26 when they head to Spokane, Wash. to battle Gonzaga.
