Beavers Fall to Cardinal in Series Finale
March 26, 2023 | Softball
STANFORD, Calif. -- The Oregon State softball team fell by an 8-4 margin against Stanford on Sunday afternoon in the series finale.
Stanford opened the scoring early by tacking on three in the game's first inning.
The Beavs (10-18-1, 1-7-1 Pac-12) battled back and answered in a big way to tie it at 3-3. With two away, a trio of Beavers – Eliana Gottlieb, Madyson Clark and Abby Doerr – contributed to leveling things with the Cardinal. Kaiea Higa and Harleigh Braswell knocked singles – OSU's first hits of the contest - before the two-out, three-run rally kicked off.
An inning later, the Cardinal retook the lead with a RBI double to left center, scoring one for a 4-3 advantage. To tie things up or even take the lead, Grace Messmer's fly to deep left was the inning's third out that stranded the bases loaded for Oregon State in the fourth.
The Cardinal added to their lead when they took advantage of a miscue by the Beaver defense in the home half of the fifth. Gottlieb answered in the sixth with a solo shot – her first of the season – to right center to bring the deficit back to just a run. Stanford quickly got the run back after plating three in their half of the sixth for three and their biggest lead of the game at 8-4.
Gottlieb tallied a 3-for-3 day, which included three hits and a pair of runs batted in to help the OSU offense.
Tarni Stepto (4-8-1) was charged with the loss after allowing nine hits and seven walks but struck out three.
Oregon State will return home to Kelly Field for the revival of the Rivalry Series next weekend. Friday's first pitch against the Ducks is set for 3 p.m. and can be seen on the Pac-12 Network.
