Cougars Overcome Standout Performances from Beers and Gardiner
February 19, 2023 | Women's Basketball
PULLMAN, Wash. – Timea Gardiner and Raegan Beers combined for 32 points, but offensive rebounds helped Washington State pull away and hand the Oregon State a 67-57 defeat on the road.
Â
Gardiner posted a career-high 17 points along with eight rebounds while Beers contributed 15 points with 10 rebounds for her 13th double-double of the season. Bendu Yeaney secured her 200th career steal in the win, making her the only active Pac-12 player with 1,000 points and 200 steals in her career.
Â
The game opened with the teams trading baskets en route to a 10-10 score midway through the first quarter. Oregon State's starting lineup with four freshmen around Bendu Yeaney acquitted itself well with Beers and Adlee Blacklock scoring the first five OSU points.
Â
Washington State took the lead early in the second quarter with a 12-2 run to close the first quarter and open the second. After a back-and-forth middle of the period, the Cougs took their largest lead of the half at 31-19 with 3:28 left.
Â
That's when the Beavs made their move. Yeaney got into the paint for a pair before Beers cleaned up a miss with a three-point play. Gardiner closed the scoring for the half with a three-pointer on the fast break that cut the Cougar lead to 31-27.
Â
WSU moved back into a big lead in the third. After a Gardiner three pulled the Beavs within two at 38-36, the Cougars went on a 9-0 run for an 11-point advantage. Blacklock knocked down a triple and Jelena Mitrovic made back-to-back baskets on nifty post-ups late in the period, but Washington State closed the quarter with a 53-45 lead.
Â
Oregon State continued to battle in the fourth quarter, pulling from down 13 early in the period to within five with 1:29 remaining. Gardiner and Beers each scored four in the 8-0 run. OSU had opportunities to close the gap further, but missed free throws and offensive rebounds gave WSU the chance to escape with a win.
Â
Up next, Oregon State returns home for its final two home games on Thursday and Saturday against Arizona State and Arizona.
