Four Take Southeast Open Titles

SALEM, Va. – Wrapping up the first weekend of action of the season on the east coast, the Oregon State wrestling team had 12 end the day with podium finishes – including four champions - at the Southeast Open.
Gabe Whisenhunt (133) and Trey Muñoz (184) both ran the table and took down ranked opposition on the way to the individual crowns on the afternoon. Travis Wittlake and Mason Reiniche – who was competing unattached – were named co-champs at 174 after agreeing to a no-contest in the championship.
Brandon Kaylor (125), Cleveland Belton (141) and Kekana Fouret (165) followed with second place finishes while Justin Rademacher (197) and Boone McDermott (HWT) had third-place performances.
Whisenhunt started his day with an emphatic major decision before stunning fourth-ranked Sam Latona (Virginia Tech) to clinch his trip to the final. The Corvallis native completed his title with a decision at 10-7 over Mason Liephart. Muñoz – the returning All-American - used consecutive majors and consecutive decisions to win his crown.
Kaylor fell in sudden victory in the final after starting his day with a technical fall and a close win at decision to clinch a spot in the first final while Belton was edged by a 6-5 line to 22nd-ranked Jordan Titus, which came after a sudden victory win in the semifinal round. Fouret used back-to-back falls and a decision before falling in the final round.
Beavs finished with third places at 197 and heavyweight as Rademacher and McDermott both clinched with sizable wins with major decisions.
At 149, Austin Scott had a 1-3 day, winning by fall in his first bout before bowing out to Virginia's Erik Roggie. Murphy Menke (157), TJ McDonnell (174) and Asher Ruchti (197) finished with identical 1-2 marks.
Oregon State will return to action on November 19 when they travel to eighth-ranked Iowa for a dual with the Hawkeyes. The first bout from Carver-Hawkeye Arena is slated for 10 a.m. PT and can be seen on BTN+.
