November 19, 2023 | Wrestling
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Brandon Kaylor's 7-6 win by decision over No. 11 Drake Ayala highlighted Oregon State's bout at No. 3/7 Iowa on Sunday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Kaylor – ranked No. 18 – joined third-ranked Trey Munoz and No. 22 Boone McDermott in recording wins for the Beavers over their Hawkeye opposition.
Munoz registered a technical fall at 4:45 and soundly defeated Brennan Swafford with a 20-4 line. Returning to his home state of Iowa, McDermott won by decision at 4-1 over Bradley Hill to close out the action in the heavyweight bout.
Kaylor fell behind early in the first when Ayala registered the first takedown of the bout at 3-0. The second ended at a 4-4 deadlock when Kaylor escaped and took Ayala down before he tied it. Kaylor took charge when it mattered most and outscored Ayala with a 3-2 advantage to secure the upset.
Munoz cruised to the tech fall win with a 14-2 advantage in the second frame, which included a four point near-fall in a seven-point run.
McDermott opened his bout with four points over the first two periods to build his advantage. He conceded the one point after Hill escaped out to start the final frame to make it a 4-1 bout.
The homestanding Hawkeyes took control with wins from 133 to 174 and again at 197 to down the Beavs.
In his first collegiate bout, Nash Singleton (149) had a near-upset of ninth-ranked Victor Voinovich but fell short in sudden victory. Singleton – called for a stall with seconds left – was taken down by Voinovich in the bonus period.
Oregon State will next take part in the ultra-competitive Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas after a week away. Action from the two-day tournament will begin on Friday, December 1.
