Beavs Defeat No. 25 North Carolina to Cap 3-0 Day
November 02, 2023 | Wrestling
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 20th-ranked Oregon State wrestling team opened the 2023-24 season with a 3-0 day in the Carolina Duals in North Carolina, taking down hosts, No. 25 North Carolina and two sweeps.
Five Beavers – Kekana Fouret, Boone McDermott, Murphy Menke, Trey Muñoz and Noah Tolentino – turned in unblemished 3-0 records after the first day.
Oregon State secured the first ranked win of the season by taking consecutive bouts from 149 to 184 to turn a 10-0 deficit to an 18-10 lead with a pair of bouts to go to clinch victory over the 25th-ranked Tar Heels. Noah Tolentino and Murphy Menke used identical 2-1 wins at sudden victory to get the Beavs on the board for the first six points. Oregon State grabbed the lead at 12-10 after back-to-back 5-0 decisions by Kekana Fouret and No. 11 Travis Wittlake.
In the 174 lb. bout, the Beavers went ahead for good with Wittlake's win in which he clocked almost three minutes of riding time over the Heels' Sabino Portella to help get the advantage.
Third-ranked Trey Muñoz (184) and 21st-ranked Boone McDermott (HWT) wrapped things up with fall each to seal the third win of the day for the Beavers. Muñoz needed just 55 seconds to pin Chris Salazar to push the Beavs to an advantage of eight. After Mason Christiansen fell in the 197 lb bout, McDermott needed a touch longer than Muñoz did to secure the win, chipping away north of a minute to pin 33rd-ranked Guttridge for the final win of the day.
Competition started with a pair of sweeps over Greensboro College and Queens to open the day with a 2-0 mark. Between the two matches, OSU totaled 10 falls – including eight against Queens. Fouret and TJ McDonnell had consecutive decisions by technical fall to help take down Greensboro.
The 3-0 start marks the best start in a three-match span for a Beavers team in the Chris Pendleton era, besting a 2-1 mark set just last season. The sweeps were also the third and fourth to also happen in the Pendleton era, and the first since a 34-0 defeat of Pac-12 foe Little Rock back in the 2021-22 season.
Oregon State will continue action on the east coast with the Southeastern Open on Saturday, November 4. Competition will commence at 6 a.m. PT and can be seen on FloWrestling.
