Wittlake Secures Spot in Semis as Beavs Compete at Cliff Keen
December 01, 2023 | Wrestling
LAS VEGAS – Stepping away from dual action, the 17th-ranked Oregon State wrestling team saw its student-athletes compete in the always-competitive Cliff Keen Las Vegas Wrestling Invitational.
Friday's action concluded and was highlighted by Travis Wittlake (174) securing a spot in Saturday morning's semifinals. The Coos Bay product, Wittlake used a win by technical fall in his second bout to clinch his place – just two wins away from his second tournament title of the season following his crown in November's Southeast Open.
Four – Brandon Kaylor (125), Nash Singleton (149), Matthew Olguin (165) and Boone McDermott (HWT) – worked their way from defeats to place themselves in the consolation semifinals of their respective weight classes. Facing elimination late in the third period, Singleton secured a late takedown to defeat ninth-ranked Quinn Kinner – his first win over a ranked foe - to book his ticket to the consolation semis.
The Beavers ended Friday in sixth place with 69 points – 19.5 points off Iowa State, who are in first place. Oregon State will look to improve off consecutive eighth-place finishes in Las Vegas.
Oregon State found themselves in eighth place following the round of 32 with 19.5 points and ended the first session in fourth with 39.5 points in fourth place after the round of 16.
Eight of the ten advanced into the round of 16 while the other two placed into the consolation bracket. Five proceeded onto the quarterfinal session.
Action from the Cliff Keen Invitational will conclude tomorrow, starting with the semifinal rounds set for 10 a.m. before the finals session at 3 p.m.
