Beers Dominates, Beavs Knock Off Wildcats
November 12, 2023 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. -Â After trailing Villanova for the majority of the first half, Oregon State owned the second half to claim the victory and move to 2-0 with a 63-56 win over the Wildcats, a Sweet 16 team last year.
Â
Raegan Beers led the Beavers with a 20-point, 14-rebound performance, her second straight double-double, despite foul trouble throughout the game. The sophomore is now just two double-doubles away from entering the Oregon State career top 10. Raegan is the first Pac-12 player since at least the 1999-00 season to record 20 points and 14 rebounds, all in under 20 minutes.Â
Â
Kelsey Rees provided valuable minutes in the post with Beers on the bench, finishing the game with 11 points, seven rebounds and one assist. Talia von Oelhoffen rounded out the Beavers in double-figures with an outstanding all-around game: 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and two blocks.Â
Â
"[Today's win] doesn't surprise me. They're very competitive. Our practices are excellent so it's just a matter of time and I tell them that all time: you're doing everything right," said head coach Scott Rueck. "It's fun to coach this group, they want to be great, they're coachable and they want to win. We're working together, it's so healthy and when it's like that, you're gonna hit the ceiling. We're on our way."Â
Â
Beers led the Beavers across the board in the first quarter with five points and three rebounds but also two fouls. She was forced to sit for the entire second quarter with foul trouble as a result of two early calls. Both teams struggled to get threes to fall in the first and Villanova led 13-12.
Â
Villanova's, Lucy Olsen, capitalized on Beers' absence and kept the Wildcats in front in the second quarter, putting up 10 points of her 24, a new career high. Kelsey Rees helped the Beavers stay in touch with four points and five rebounds during the period. The Wildcats led 29-28 at the break.Â
Â
Back in the game, the Beavers kept Villanova to only 13 points in the third quarter, finishing with a 14-6 run over the Wildcats. Oregon State's Talia von Oelhoffen, defined the lead at the end of the third with a buzzer-beater from behind the arc, sending OSU to the fourth up 46-42.Â
Â
The Beavers sealed the deal, with a fourth-quarter run of 13-2 run over the Wildcats, finishing the game with the win. Lily Hansford hit a key three-pointer down the stretch to give Oregon State its final lead of the game, one it would not relinquish.Â
Â
Timea Gardiner crashed the boards yet again and finished the game with seven rebounds and seven points. All told, the Beaver posts finished the day with 38 points and 28 rebounds - just four fewer boards than the entire Wildcat team.
Â
Next, the Beavs face the UC Davis Aggies on Friday at 6 p.m. in Gill Coliseum.
