Volleyball Takes Colorado To Five In Boulder

BOULDER, Colo. – After forcing a fifth set with a valiant win in the fourth, the Oregon State volleyball team dropped a five-set road affair to Colorado, 3-2 (25-16, 21-25, 19-25, 25-20, 11-15) on Sunday afternoon.
Megan Sheridan led the Beavers (5-11, 0-6 Pac-12) with a career-best 18 kills, while Peyton Suess followed with 17 and Mychael Vernon adding 15. Notching a double-double, Amanda Burns led with 31 assists and combined them with 11 kills. Elizabeth Schuster followed with 25 assists and was a pair of digs (8) shy of a double-double. Ryan White paced the Beavers with 13 digs and Vernon had 12 to complete a double-double.
Sheridan recorded a .833 clip from 16 kills on 18 total attacks, committing just one error on the day. Burns' double-double marked her third of the season and first in league play.
The Beavers opened action hitting nearly 73% (.727) in the opening set on their way to the nine-point win. After the sides split the first 14 points of the frame, Oregon State took control with a 10-3 run that saw four Sheridan kills and an ace from White to go up 17-7. When the Buffaloes brought the gap within seven at 22-15, a 3-1 run by the Beavs ended things for the set win. Sheridan recorded five of her 16 kills while Burns and Schuster each helped with six assists each to their credit. Six - Burns,McDonald, Rumel, Sheridan, Suess and Vernon - recorded at least a pair of kills in the first set. On the defensive end, Vernon and White accounted for six of the Beavs' seven digs, with four and two, respectively.
Seven helpers and five kills from Burns helped the Beavs extend the match and take Colorado to five after the 25-20 fourth set win. Suess added seven kills in the frame, while Vernon had four and Sheridan pitched in three. Like in the first, the set's initial 14 points were split before a Burns ace highlighted a 4-0 spurt that gave the Beavers some momentum. Defensively, Schuster (2), Vernon (2) and White (2) combined for six of the set's 10 digs to help hold Colorado to just a .267 hitting percentage. OSU staved off a late CU run in the ending stages of the set when the Buffaloes tallied four consecutive points, closing the gap to just 24-20 until a final Burns kill cemented the set win and took things to a final set.
As a team, the Beavers recorded a .341 attacking percentage - tallying 71 kills to just 25 errors on the day.
Oregon State will return to the confines of Gill Coliseum for the beginning of a four-match homestand. A tilt with Arizona State is set for Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. and can be seen on the OSU Live Stream.
