Beavers Hold Orange and Black Duals
October 19, 2023 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Fans got their first look at the 2023-24 Oregon State wrestling team as the Beavers held their annual Orange and Black duals on Thursday night. The Orange squad took down the Black squad with an 18-15 score.
Starting the night with at 133 lbs, Gabe Whisenhunt defeated Chase DeBlaere via decision at 11-4. Whisenhunt built up his lead in the first thanks to a pair of takedowns for the quick 6-2 advantage that he took until the horn sounded.
Murphy Menke defeated Dagen Condomitti with a 20-4 score via technical fall in the 157 lb. bout. By the 2:11 mark of the first period, Menke totaled a takedown and four-point near fall to take a commanding 7-1 lead that went up to 15-4 after securing two more takedowns and an additional four-point near fall. He closed out Condomitti with a 20-4 line after taking the riding time point.
Making his Gill Coliseum debut, Boone McDermott used a 17-6 major decision to defeat Charley Hastriter in the heavyweight bout. McDermott tallied 10 of the first period's 11 points from two takedowns and a four-point near fall. Hastriter crept further onto the board with an escape and takedown to close his deficit to 12-5 going into the third. McDermott sealed it with a 5-1 third to take the bout.
Brandon Kaylor – the returning Pac-12 champ at 125 – had a strong opening period to stave off Maximo Renteria – a newcomer to the program – by a 5-2 line. Using the first – and only – takedown of the bout, Kaylor rode the momentum to the win. A Renteria escape closed his deficit to just 4-2 in the third, but Kaylor's riding time point proved to be too much.
Cleveland Belton – the defending champ at 141 – took a 3-1 lead after the first and didn't look back on the way to a 9-4 win by decision. A reversal and four-point near fall all but clinched him the bout while Ayden Garver got on the board with a late escape in the third.
Battling back from an early 0-3 hole, Noah Tolentino rattled off 17 of the bout's next 20 points to defeat Krayle Stormer by major decision. An escape and two takedowns turned the tides of the matchup to give him a lead he would not relinquish. A three-point near fall and a riding time point secured him the 18-6 win.
In the 165 lb. bout, Matthew Olguin – the defending Pac-12 champ and the event's most outstanding wrestler – used a second period takedown to break a scoreless bout and used that to win. After Garrik Fouret's late escape in the second brought him within a point at 3-2, Olguin opened the third with an escape of his own and made it the winning point.
Travis Wittlake – a native Oregonian and Oklahoma State transfer – needed a third period escape to break the deadlock with Mason Reiniche for the tight 4-3 win. Scoreless after the first and tied at three after two, Wittlake broke off from Reiniche's hold after 28 ticks to secure the deciding point and avoid an extra frame.
Returning All-American and two-time defending Pac-12 champ at 184, Trey Munoz made quick work, tallying a 19-3 win by technical fall over John Knight in the evening's penultimate bout. Needing just a little more than one period to secure things, Munoz finished the bout with a four-point near fall.
Closing the event's action, Justin Rademacher – a freshman making his Gill debut – secured the win at 197 lbs with a 4-3 decision over Mason Christiansen. Rademacher staved off a comeback attempt by Christiansen after jumping out to a 4-1 lead after the second. The new Beav escaped from Christiansen before taking him down to score all he'd need to.
The Beavers will open the season on November 2nd with action from the North Carolina Quad Duals in Chapel Hill. Opposition for Coach Chris Pendleton's squad includes North Carolina, Queens (N.C.) and UNCG. Times and broadcast information are still to be determined.
