
Oregon State Opens WCWS with No. 14 Florida Thursday

WCWS STORYLINES
• Oregon State (39-20, 9-15) makes their first appearance since 2006 and second overall at the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
• For the first time since NCAA Super Regionals debuted in 2005, three unseeded teams have advanced to the World Series. Joining the Beavers are the Texas Longhorns and Arizona Wildcats.
• The WCWS begins Thursday, June 2 as the Beavers play the third game of the tourney versus No. 14 Florida (48-17, 13-11 SEC) at 4 p.m. PT.
• Thursday's game is available to watch on ESPN.

BACK TO OKC
• With their backs against the wall, No. 7 ranked Oregon State swept a double-header - 3-0 and 1-0 - against No. 6 ranked California in the NCAA Super Regional on May 28, 2006. The victories allowed OSU to clinch its first ever berth in the NCAA Women's College World Series. Oregon State scored three of its four runs on the day in the opening inning of play, with senior Vanessa Iapala's sacrifice fly plating the lone run in the title contest. Beaver pitcher Brianne McGowan threw every inning in the shutout victories and finished with nine strikeouts in the night-cap.
• Before the series moved to OKC as the official WCWS, Oregon State made four in AIWA Championship appearances in the 1977, 78, 79, and 81 seasons.
LAST TIME OUT
• Oregon State won the NCAA Stanford Super Regional over Stanford in two games to punch its ticket to the WCWS.
• The Beavers won game one, 3-1, before eliminating the Cardinal with a 2-0 shutout in game two on Saturday.
• Maria Mazon continues to impress with 13 strikeouts in 9.2 innings, earning a win and a save to go along with a 2-for-5 performance from the plate during the weekend.
• Grace Messmer drove in the two Beaver runs in the finale while Madison Simon hit a two-run bomb during the opener.
A GLANCE AT THE GATORS
• Oregon State and Florida meet for the fourth time in program history Thursday evening. The Gators are 3-0 against the Beavers.
• The Gators, who finished fifth in the SEC, come to OKC after winning the Blacksburg Super Regional and Gainesville Regional. They hold a 5-1 record in the NCAA Tournament, with their only loss coming to Supers-host No. 3 Virginia Tech last Saturday by a count of 6-0.
• The Gators are led by two players that are batting over .400, including Skylar Wallace (.406, 71 hits, 79 runs, 53 RBIs, 12 doubles) and Kendra Falby (.401, 83 hits, 63 runs, three triples). Elizabeth Hightower has thrown 163.2 innings on the year and holds a 2.44 ERA. Lexie Delbrey (2.20 ERA, 108 IP, 116 strikeouts) was exceptional in the supers, striking out six Hokies in seven innings.
THE BEAVS VS. THE FIELD
• Arizona: The Beavers and Wildcats are no strangers to each other, having met 130 times. Arizona holds a 6-23 record against OSU but the Beavers took the Pac-12 series earlier this season. It was the first clinching series over Arizona since the 2013 season.
• Northwestern: The Wildcats hold a 12-14 advantage all-time over the Beavers. OSU took the last matchup back on February 26, 2016 and are riding a three-game winning streak.
• Oklahoma: Oklahoma and Oregon State have met 19 times, including the 2019 matchup after the Sooners came away with its third straight over the Beavers with a 3-0 final. OSU's last win came in 2016 by a score of 6-4.
• Oklahoma State: The series with the Cowgirls is the only winning history for Oregon State. In 17 games, the Beavers hold a 10-7 record and are perfect (2-0) with head coach Laura Berg.
• Texas: In five games, the Longhorns are 4-1 over the Orange & Black. The lone win for OSU occurred in 1999 (2-1).
• UCLA: Just like Arizona, the Beavers and UCLA are no strangers to each other. UCLA owns a 109-15 record, having swept the Beavers during the regular season in Corvallis. The last win for OSU occurred in 2017 (8-5).
BEAVERS AT A GLANCE
• With its 39 victories this season, it's the most under head coach Laura Berg and most in a single season since the 2007 campaign when the Beavers went 41-23. The record in a single season is 47 back in 1999.
• As a team, the Beavers bat .272 and average 4.76 runs per game. Ten different OSU players have gone yard, including 27 from the "Bash Sisters" in Frankie Hammoude (15) and Mariah Mazon (12).
• Hammoude leads the power category with a team-best 15 bombs and moved into second in the program history books with a career 43 home runs. She is hitting a team-best .386 with an impressive .752 slugging percentage.
• Mazon has hit a season-best 12 homers on the season with a .366 batting average and a .786 slugging percentage. Mazon has driven in a team-best 40 RBIs with 31 runs scored.
• Two other Beavers batting .300 or better, including Kiki Escobar (.343, 74 hits, 41 runs, 10 doubles) and Kaylah Nelsen (.302, 38 hits, 23 RBIs, eight doubles).
• Mazon (2.05 ERA) leads the pitching staff with 17 victories and three saves in 35 appearances. She has thrown 185 frames, striking out a career-best 220 this season. The super senior became the OSU all-time strikeout leader in the first game of the Stanford Super Regionals, surpassing Brianne McGowan in the record books. The record holder now has 861 strikeouts and counting.
• Freshman Sarah Haendiges has thrown the majority of the work behind Mazon, garnering 13 wins. Haendiges earned the win in the circle in game two of the Stanford Super Regionals, and is 3-0 during postseason. She picked up a pair of victories at the Knoxville Regional in two starts, allowing just seven hits and struck out five in 12 innings.
NFCA ALL-REGION BEAVS
• Oregon State softball placed four on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Pacific All-Region teams, announced Thursday. The Beavers led the Pacific Region with three first team accolades.
• Senior Mariah Mazon, junior Frankie Hammoude and freshman Sarah Haendiges were named first team while freshman Kiki Escobar took home second team honors. The honorees were selected by a vote of NFCA member head coaches from each respective region.
• The group is now eligible to be named NFCA All-Americans, with the announcement coming this week during the WCWS.
