
Beavers Battle No. 8 Duke to the Wire

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Oregon State men's basketball team battled No. 8 Duke for the full 40 minutes, as the Beavers fell 54-51 Thursday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Oregon State was within one with 16 seconds to play, and neither side led by more than six in the contest.

The Beavers' defense was strong throughout the game, as OSU held Duke to 26.7 percent shooting from the floor and 17.2 percent shooting from beyond the arc.

Jordan Pope led the Beavers with 14 point and five rebounds, as he extended his run to five consecutive double-digit scoring games to begin his collegiate career. Dexter Akanno had 12 points for Oregon State, while Dzmitry Ryuny finished with eight points and five rebounds.

Glenn Taylor Jr. finished with seven points, while Rodrigue Andela had six points and five rebounds off the bench.

The Beavers got off to a strong start, as a pair of Ryuny triples sparked OSU to a 9-5 lead at the game's first media break. The defenses clamped down for much of the opening half, as Duke led 16-15 with 7:10 to go before the intermission.

Oregon State went in front by a point with less than a minute left in the first half, but Duke used a late 3-pointer to head to the break up 29-27. Neither team led by more than five in the opening 20 minutes.

The Beavers retook the lead early in the second half, going up 33-29 to prompt a Duke timeout. Akanno knocked down a triple to put OSU up 38-32 with 13 minutes to play. Duke battled back to go in front 47-45 with 7:32 remaining.

Oregon State headed into the final two minutes down 50-49, and trailed 52-51 with 16 seconds left before the Blue Devils hit a pair of free throws to extend the edge to four. The Beavers had a pair of chances from long range as the clock wound down, but the attempts were off target.

The Beavers will take on either Xavier or Florida at 3 p.m. on Friday.
