CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team won a five set battle inside Gill Coliseum against Arizona State on Thursday afternoon.

Arizona State opened the match with a 28-26 win in a back and forth first set. In dominating fashion, the Beavers responded with a 25-16 victory. The Sun Devils commanded set three for the 25-18 win and it was Oregon State taking the narrow 29-27 win in the fourth frame. The Beavers held on for the match victory with a 15-11 win in the final set.

ASU opened the game quick, jumping out to an early 9-4 lead. Aliyah McDonald snapped a 3-0 Sun Devil run and ignited a 6-0 Beaver run with a kill to put OSU in front 10-9. A 5-0 run from Arizona State got them the lead back at 18-14.

OSU quickly tied the game back up at 18-18 after getting four straight points behind three McDonald kills and an Ellie Turner ace. The teams traded point down the stretch, but it was ASU pulling out the 28-26 win.

The Beavers controlled set two early following ASU earning the first two points. Oregon State went on a 9-3 run to take a 9-5 advantage. After ASU cut its deficit to two, OSU took the next three points to extend the lead to 12-7 and force the Sun Devils to call a timeout.

Maddie goings sparked a 4-1 Beaver run as they went up by six, 17-11, forcing ASU to call its second timeout. Arizona State took the first point out of the timeout, but OSU claimed the next four and jumped out to a 21-12 lead. Goings secured the second set, 25-16, for the Beavers with a kill.

The Sun Devils opened the third set with a 16-4 run. A Mychael Vernon kill began a 4-0 OSU run, making the score 16-8 in favor of ASU and force them to call a timeout. Oregon State took four of the next six points out of the timeout to cut the Beaver deficit to six, 18-12.

OSU threatened late, coming within five of Arizona State following a 5-1 run, making the score 22-17. The Sun Devils went on to take three of the final four points for the 25-18 set victory.

Set four played déjà vu to set one as the teams traded points and runs. It was Arizona State who forced an early OSU timeout after taking a 9-5 lead. The Beavers made the score 15-13 in favor of ASU following a 3-0 run, which forced the Sun Devils to call a timeout.

After trailing for the entire fourth set, Oregon State took its first lead at 23-22 following a 9-2 run. ASU quickly tied the game and regained the lead on the next two points. The teams traded the next six points as ASU held a 27-26 lead. Oregon State closed the match on a 3-0 run that included kills from Vernon and Goings, forcing a deciding fifth set.

Lindsey Schell recorded a kill that was followed by a Vernon ace as OSU held an early 6-3 lead in set five, forcing ASU to call its first timeout. Just eight points later with the Beavers ahead 10-7, Arizona State was forced to call its final timeout of the match.

ASU knotted the game at 11-11 after a 4-0 fun of its own that forced OSU to call a timeout. McDonald put the Beavers back in front 12-11 as they closed the game on a 4-0 run, capped off by a Grace Massey ace for match point.

Freshman Mychael Vernon recorded her first career double-double with a team-high 18 kills and 16 digs.
Freshman Izzi Szulczewski posted her fifth double-double of the season with a game-high 40 assists and 18 digs.
Senior Grace Massey notched season and game-highs of 26 digs.
Junior Lindsey Schell logged season-highs of nine blocks and 11 kills.
Oregon State led the match in digs (93-91), kills (63-58), aces (12-8), and blocks (13-11).
