Pivec Awaits Friday’s WNBA Draft
April 16, 2020 | Women's Basketball
Event slated to start at 4 p.m. on ESPN
CORVALLIS – Oregon State standout Mikayla Pivec will look to become the fifth Oregon State women's basketball player selected over the last five WNBA Drafts, as the league holds its annual draft on Friday.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the WNBA will conduct a virtual draft without players, guests, and media. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert will announce the draft picks live on ESPN with coverage beginning at 4 p.m., and top prospects will take part remotely. The draft will also be available on the ESPN App.
"This is such an amazing opportunity," Pivec said. "It is the culmination of the dreams I had when I was playing at recess in elementary school. I am thankful that this opportunity is here for me, and I am going to work as hard as I can to play as long as possible."
Pivec received All-America Honorable Mention from the Associated Press, Women's Basketball Coaches' Association and the US Basketball Writers Association her senior season. The guard has been named to the Wooden Award Ballot, the Cheryl Miller Award Top-10, and the Naismith Trophy Midseason Team, and was a semifinalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Award. Pivec was tabbed as the Preseason WNIT MVP and to the All-Tournament Teams for both the Maui Classic and the Miami Thanksgiving Classic.
The guard from Lynnwood, Wash. averaged 14.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game during her senior season. She set Oregon State's career rebounding record during the Pac-12 Tournament. Pivec finished second in the Pac-12 in rebounding and fifth in the conference in field goal percentage. The guard had 14 double-doubles this season, and is in the top-10 in Oregon State history for career points, rebounds and assists.
For her contributions as a complete student-athlete, Pivec was named a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award. The senior has displayed a passion for community service, especially finding efficient ways to get the homeless access to resources. She is a team captain, and completed her undergraduate degree in three years, majoring in BioHealth Sciences. Pivec is currently a graduate student working toward a degree in Biochemistry and Biophysics.
The WNBA announced on April 3 that it would postpone the start of the 2020 season, which was slated to tip on May 15, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Head to WNBA.com for updates regarding any changes to key dates.
