Beavers Split Games on Day Two of Rebel Classic

OSU dropped game one to SUU, before taking down UNLV.
Las Vegas, Nev. – Oregon State softball (3-1-0) split games against Southern Utah and UNLV on the second day of the 2020 Rebel Kickoff in Las Vegas, Nev.
Oregon State dropped the first game to Southern Utah, 2-1, before bouncing back in the second game to defeat UNLV 3-1.
Vs. Southern Utah
Despite jumping out to an early lead, Oregon State dropped the first game on the day to Southern Utah, 2-1.
The Beavers capitalized in the top of the first inning with junior Missy Nunes punching a double down the third-base line. Junior Mariah Mazon hit a RBI double to right field scoring Nunes to give OSU the 1-0 lead.
OSU's defense made some impressive plays to keep SUU off the board early, including freshman Xiao Gin fielding a groundball backhanded heading towards second base and getting the throw off in time to get the out at first.
The Beavers come close to extending the lead in the third with Nunes and Mazon each singling again, but OSU left them stranded.
The Thunderbirds started the comeback in the fourth inning getting two runners on off a single and an error. SUU scored the first run off a close play to at home plate from Grace Messmer making a throw from shortstop to Rylee Maston behind the plate. The Beavers went for the tag but the play went in favor of SUU to tie the game.
Southern Utah took the lead later in the fourth when OSU made the play at first rather than going for the tag at home to record two outs. Mazon struck out the final batter swinging to get out of the inning.
The Beavers came close to tying the game in the fifth starting with sophomore Izzy Owen singling through the left side and junior Morgan Allen reaching first on a bunt pushed past SUU's third baseman. Gin executive a sac bunt to advance both Owen and Allen into scoring position with one out, but OSU stranded them.
OSU executed a double play in the bottom of the sixth to end the inning following Mazon throwing to Messmer at second to get the lead runner before making the throw to Allen for the second out.
OSU attempted to battle back in the top of the seventh with Owen singling up the middle but fell short in the comeback.
Mazon started in the circle for the Beavers and finished with seven strikeouts.
Vs. UNLV
The second game started off strong defensively with Trystan Melancon striking out two batters in the bottom half of the first inning.
Mazon went to work in the second inning with a leadoff double, but the Beavers wound up stranding her.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Rebels got back-to-back leadoff singles that both advanced to second and third off a wild pitch with no outs. Melancon locked down the inning making back-to-back-to-back strikeouts forcing UNLV to leave both runners stranded.
Both sides remained quiet until the top of the fifth inning when Morgan Allen led-off with a single. Val Pero followed that with a single of her own up the middle. Chance Burden came in to pinch run for Allen and both Burden and Pero advanced a base following Maia Rader laying down a sac bunt. Owen come up with a two-run RBI single up the middle to put the Beavers on the board first.
The Beavers made a pitching change bringing in Mazon in the bottom of the fifth. UNLV was able to hit a two-out double into center field. The runner advanced to third off a wild pitch before being brought home on a single. The Rebels would load the bases before Allen made the final out. OSU took a 2-1 lead into the sixth inning.
Mazon stayed on fire with a bat in her hands hitting a double into left center and was replaced by Karla Calderon as a pinch runner. Allen drew a walk, but OSU left both on to end the inning.
The Beavers would extend the lead in the top of the seventh beginning with Owen drawing a walk. Freshman Grace Messmer singled down the right-field line, advancing Owen to third base. Gin singled into left field to advance Messmer to second and score Owen, giving the Beavers a 3-1.
Oregon State's defense held tough in the bottom of the seventh forcing UNLV down in order.
Melancon picked up her second win on the season pitching the first four innings to finish with six strikeouts before being replaced by Mazon who picked up her first save of the season. Mazon finished with four strikeouts.
Up Next:Oregon State concludes action at the Rebel Kickoff tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. against CSUN.
