Mazon, Molnar Homer in Beaver Victory
February 09, 2020 | Softball
Both Mazon and Molnar record their first home runs in the Orange and Black.
Las Vegas, Nev. – Junior Mariah Mazon and senior Fallon Molnar each hit their first career home run in the Orange and Black to help Oregon State softball improve to 4-1 on the season with a 5-3 victory over CSUN on Sunday in Las Vegas, Nev.
The Beavers dominated from the first inning with freshman Xiao Gin getting a base hit through the left side to put an early runner on. Junior Mariah Mazon came up two batters later to hit a two-run home run scoring Gin and giving Oregon State an early 2-0 lead.
On the defensive half of the first, freshman Grace Messmer made impressive back-to-back plays at shortstop to get the first two batters out in as many pitches.
OSU continued the offensive attack in the top of the second after sophomore Izzy Owen drew a walk at the bottom of the order. Messmer followed with a single into right field advancing Owen into scoring position for junior Missy Nunes to connect with one that sailed over CSUN's shortstop into left field for a RBI single. Oregon State maintained the 3-0 lead until the top of the seventh.
In the fourth, OSU attempted to extend the lead when Gin laid down a bunt and then stole second base. She advanced to third as Nunes reached first on a fielder's choice. Nunes stole second and Mazon was walked to load the bases with only one out but OSU wasn't able to capitalize.
The Beavers came close in the sixth when Gin and Nunes hit back-to-back singles into right field and through the left side, respectively. Mazon reached on an error by CSUN's third baseman to load the bases, but just like the fourth, weren't able to capitalize.
The Beavers found a spark in the top of the seventh inning beginning with Rylee Maston hitting a double off the left-field fence. Karla Calderon came in to pinch run for Maston as Molnar stepped up to the plate to pinch hit. Molnar pushed the Beavers ahead with her first career homer to bring in Calderon as OSU took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
CSUN started to make a comeback in the bottom half of the inning when the leadoff batter reached on an error and made it around to third base. The runner scored off a single through the left side. CSUN scored two more runs before OSU was able to close it out with a 5-3 victory.
Mazon improves to 2-1 on the season and finished the game with seven strikeouts.
