Beavers Tie Season-High, Come Up Short Against No. 3 Bruins
February 29, 2020 | Women's Gymnastics
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The 18th-ranked Oregon State gymnastics team tied its season-high, scoring 196.825, but came up short against No. 3 UCLA before the 4,875 fans inside Gill Coliseum Saturday afternoon.
Kaitlyn Yanish won the floor exercise event title with a score of 9.950 and four OSU gymnasts set career-highs in the meet including Halli Briscoe, who posted a 9.950 on the uneven bars.
"We did a really good job of not getting down on ourselves early in the meet. We had a rough start on the vault and didn't stick anything and I know we can be better," acting head coach Michael Chaplin said. "But they come to compete every week and their focus really showed when we left that start behind and were really good the rest of the way."
"We faced a little adversity with Lacy Dagen and Maela (Lazaro) out today, but the rest of the lineup stepped up. I anticipate and look forward to having them back next week."
Oregon State got off to a slow start on the vault where they were without the elder Dagen near the end of the lineup. Sabrina Gill led way with a 9.775 while Kristina Peterson and Kaitlyn Yanish each posted scores of 9.750.
Trailing after the opening stanza, 49.325-48.725, the Beavers moved to the uneven bars with the same six gymnasts as the first eight meets. Five out of six OSU gymnasts registered season-highs, en route to a season-best 49.400, with Colette Yamaoka setting the tone with her first 9.80 routine of the season. Halli Briscoe established a career-high with a 9.950 to take second in the meet and Gill added a 9.925. Isis Lowery posted a score of 9.875, Alyssa Minyard hit for a 9.850 and Kayla Bird tied her career-high with a 9.80.
Still behind 98.475-98.125 at the halfway mark, OSU continued its momentum on the balance beam. Destinee Davis notched a 9.80 open the rotation and Peterson, competing on the beam for the first time in 2020 set a career-high with a 9.850. Lowery tied her top score of the year with a 9.875 and Madi Dagen matched it at the end of the lineup sandwiched around a pair of 9.825s from Gill and Jenna Domingo to posted a team score of 49.250 on the event.
The Beavers went to the floor exercise down 147.725-147.375 and came away just missing their season's best score with a 49.450. Yanish won the event title with a 9.950, while Lowery and Dagen each posted scores of 9.90. Bird set a career-high with a 9.875 and Peterson added a score of 9.825.
Oregon State remains at home for the rest of the regular season, hosting two more meets in the coming weeks. The Beavers welcome Pacific Northwest rival Washington to Gill Coliseum on Friday, March 6, for a 7 p.m. dual meet. OSU then faces Illinois at home for Senior Day on Saturday, March 14 at 1 p.m.
