Alex McGarry doubled three times and Jake Dukart went 4-for-4 to pace Oregon State to a 5-1 win over Gonzaga Sunday at Surprise Stadium. Jake Pfennigs got the win after allowing five hits and a run in five innings while Cooper Hjerpe picked up the save with four scoreless innings in his collegiate debut. McGarry drove in two runs and Dukart one, along with Ryan Ober, in the win.
Against BYU
Oregon State is playing BYU for the first time since 2009 when taking a pair of games from the Cougars in Corvallis. The Beavers are 15-6 all-time versus BYU, including a 9-6 mark in neutral-site contests. OSU has won eight consecutive in the series dating back to 1995.
They'll Know Them
Undergraduate assistant coach Joey Wong played for the Beavers the last time OSU met up with BYU, in 2009. Wong tallied four hits in four games, including 2008, versus the Cougars, posting a double, home run and six RBI. Mitch Canham, the Pat Casey Head Baseball Coach, tallied three hits, with a home run and two RBI, in his career versus BYU. Undergrad assistant coach Daniel Robertson had five hits versus BYU over two games in 2008.
McGarry's Big Day
Alex McGarry doubled three times in the win over Gonzaga, becoming the first Beaver to do so since Cole Gillespie in 2006 against Kansas.
Hjerpe's Debut
Cooper Hjerpe had quite the collegiate debut on Sunday. The freshman held Gonzaga to just one walk in four scoreless innings. He struck out five and picked up his first career save in the process.
Stellar D
Oregon State has been stellar defensively over the first three games, committing just one error in 107 total chances. The Beavers carry a .991 fielding percentage into Sunday's game versus BYU.
