Oregon State senior tabbed as one of 30 candidates for prestigious award
CORVALLIS – Oregon State standout Mikayla Pivec has been named a candidate for the highly prestigious Senior CLASS Award.
Â
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.Â
Â
The list of 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists in February, and those names will be placed on the official ballot.
Â
The Oregon State women's basketball program has received significant recognition from the Senior CLASS Award in recent seasons, with Sydney Wiese taking the honor in 2017 and Ruth Hamblin being named one of 10 finalists in 2016.
Â
Pivec has displayed a passion for community service, especially finding efficient ways to get the homeless access to resources. She is the co-founder of Beavs CARE (Corvallis Athletes Reaching Everyone), which aims to bring Oregon State student-athletes together for service initiatives. Pivec has traveled to the Dominican Republic as part of a service trip with Beavers Without Borders, and has volunteered numerous hours with IMPACT for Life, Community Outreach Incorporated, Corvallis Women's Shelter and the DAM Worth It Campaign.
Â
Pivec is a team captain, and completed her undergraduate degree in three years, majoring in BioHealth Sciences. She is currently a graduate student working toward a degree in Biochemistry and Biophysics. Pivec earned Academic All-America honors last season and is a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic First Team honoree.
Â
On the court, Pivec leads the Beavers in points, rebounds, assists and steals. She is averaging 14.9 points and 9.8 rebounds per game, and is among the program's all-time leaders in career points, career rebounds and career assists.
Â
As a team, Oregon State is ranked No. 8 in the AP Poll this week and is 16-1 to start the season. The Beavers have won 18-straight home games, as they prepare to face No. 3 Stanford Sunday at Gill Coliseum.
