Beavers Look to Remain Undefeated in Houston

THE GAMES: The Oregon State women's soccer team travels to Texas this week for matchups against Houston and Rice. The Beavers play their first away game since week one on Thursday against the Cougars at 5 p.m. PT, before facing the Owls on Sunday at 5 p.m. PT.

HISTORY VS. COUGARS: Thursday's matchup will mark the first time in program history that Oregon State and the University of Houston have met.
HISTORY VS. OWLS: Sunday's game will be the first time in program history that Oregon State and Rice University have met.
Quick Hitters:
- The Beavers will play 11 home games this season at Lorenz Field - including five of the eight nonconference matches.
- Oregon State returns seven starters and 13 letterwinners from the 2018 squad.
- Oregon State's 5-0 start is the best start since the Beavers went 5-0 in 2010. That year, OSU made it to the second round in the NCAA Tournament.
- OSU has had the same starting XI for the last four games (Skiba, Fried, McReynolds, Ellsworth, Fonsen, Schwartz, Weinert, Studer, Herrera, Leblic and Salveter).

2018 to 2019 Comparison:
- Through five games in 2018, OSU recorded two goals on 42 shot attempts while allowing opponents 12 goals on 69 shot attempts.
- In 2019, OSU has scored 12 goals on 91 shot attempts while limiting opponents to 1 goal on 39 shots.
- Over the course of 19 games, Oregon State saw only one assist in 2018. 2019 has 11 assists in the first five games alone.
- The Beavers have been attacking early in the game scoring 6-of-12 goals to date in the first half - two of which have come within the first seven minutes of play.
- An offensive-centered team has created more corner kick opportunities for OSU taking 39 while only allowing opponents to take nine in 2019. In 2018, OSU only had nine attempts compared to 19 from opponents through five games.
- OSU relied heavily on the defensive unit and goalkeeper in 2018 causing freshman keeper, Bridgette Skiba, to record 19 saves through 453:56 minutes of play. Skiba has only recorded seven saves through 460:27 minutes in 2019.
- The Beavers have limited the foul count from last season only committing 60 to date in 2019. This time last year, OSU had committed 80.
- During the 2018 season, OSU only had five athletes score a goal. 2019 has seen more distribution with goals coming from seven different Beavers.
New Era Under Kagan:
- 2019 marks the first season for head coach Matt Kagan who joins the Beavers after spending the prior two years as the associate head coach at Mississippi State.
- During his first season at MSU, the Bulldogs posted the best record the program had had in 16 years.
- Kagan has been a member of nine coaching staffs that have led teams to the NCAA Tournament - three of those teams have advanced to the Sweet 16.
- Kagan started his professional career in 2004 at Assumption College in Massachusetts before taking the reigns of Worcester State from 2005-08.
- Kagan has started the 2019 season with a 5-0 record emphasising an offensive mindset throughout the team.
The Staff:
- Kagan brings in three distinguished coaches to join his staff.
- Jenny Ruiz-Williams was a four-year letterwinner at UNLV and a two-time All-Mountain West Selection while helping the program to their first ever NCAA appearance.
- Ruiz-Williams was a member of the Mexican National Team when they won bronze at the Pan American Games in 2003, 2011 and 2015. Ruiz-Williams scored the game-winning goal in the bronze-medal game in 2011 against Columbia.
- Ruiz-Williams joined the Seattle Reign FC in 2013 before competing in the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup with Mexico.
- Nick Stirrett joins the Beavers staff working primarily with the goalkeepers after spending the last three seasons at the University of Illinois where he helped the Illini finish fifth in the Big Ten and make it to the second round of the conference tournament in 2018.
- Prior to his time at Illinois, Stirrett helped lead the Penn State Nittany Lions to become the 2015 NCAA National Champions.
- Stirrett also spent two seasons as the head men's coach at the University of Mount Union.
- Tiff Crooks joins the staff as the Director of Operations after spending the last 12 seasons as the head coach at Case Western Reserve University.
- Crooks is the winningest coach in CWRU program history and was awarded University Athletic Association Coach Staff of the Year in 2009 and 2011.
Newcomers:
- The Beavers welcome nine newcomers to the 2019 roster, seven freshman and two transfers.
- Four newcomers have combined for 14 of OSU's 35 points to date (Schwartz - 7, McReynolds - 3, Galceran and Salveter - 1).
- All nine newcomers have seen time this season - Five have started at least one game (McReynolds, Salveter and Schwartz - 5, Herrera - 4 and Galceran - 1).
Last Week vs. New Mexico:
- Oregon State recorded a 1-0 win over the Lobos on Thursday at Lorenz Field.
- Ashleigh Fonsen netted her first career goal as a Beavers in the 52nd minute of play from 20-yards out.
- Bridgette Skiba made five saves in goal for OSU to keep UNM off the board.

- Oregon State posted its fourth clean sheet on the season with a 3-0 win over UC Davis on Sunday at Lorenz Field.
- Paula Leblic scored her first goal of the season in the 29th minute when Abby Schwartz dished the ball to Brianna McReynolds in the corner. McReynolds chipped the ball over the Lobo defense to allow Leblic to get her head on the ball.
- McKenzie Weinert recorded her fourth goal on the season in the 48th minute when she punched the ball from just inside the box with her left foot into the lower left corner of the net.
- Schwartz scored her third goal of the season off a passing combo from Weinert and Taylor Lemmond in the 82nd minute.
- OSU outshot the Aggies, 22-12, with shot attempts coming from nine different Beavers.
