Nelson Playing with DSS Haarlem in the Netherlands
June 07, 2019 | Softball
Corvallis – Oregon State pitcher Meehra Nelson signed to play softball internationally with DSS Haarlem base in the Netherlands.
"Softball is the one thing that has always been my constant and has always been my escape," said Nelson. "Being able to continue to play and coach really means to the world to me."
Nelson became connected to the coach of the club team, which is located between Amsterdam and the beach, through Steph Trzinski, a University of California player. Trzinski, the former Pac-12 foe, also played for the DSS.
Haarlem is in the Golden League, which is considered one of the best leagues in Europe, with the national team finishing fourth in the last Softball World Championships in 2017. Haarlem is considered the baseball and softball capital of Europe, and was the home to the 2014 World Softball Championships.
Games in Europe started back in April and run until October, but due to certain rules, Americans can only stay and play in Europe for 90 days. Nelson joined the team at the end of May following the conclusion of the Oregon State softball season and will remain with the team until August.
"It's very different here," stated Nelson. "Things are slower and more laid back, but it makes the game more fun."
Nelson has pitched five games the DSS has played since she's been in the Netherlands averaging between eight and 10 strike outs. One specific game Nelson pitched was a complete game on May 25 for the DSS with 7.0 innings and seven strike outs facing 30 batters.
"I am so grateful to have this opportunity to spread my knowledge about this sport and to continue to play the game I've always loved," continued Nelson. "I fell back in love with the game when I came here to play, so getting the chance to play with these amazing athletes is something I will forever cherish."
Nelson is scheduled to return back to her hometown, Reseda, Calif., in August. She will return to classes at Oregon State during the fall term where she will finish her degree in human development and family science before going into wildlife conservation.
