Beavers Fight Through and Through
February 09, 2019 | Softball
Beavers battle to two victories at the Kajikawa Classic on Saturday.
GAME ONE vs Seattle U
The Redhawks scored first getting two runs across the plate in the bottom of the first.
Oregon State cut the gap in the top of the first following Chance Burden getting hit by a pitch and then senior Kayleen Shafer hitting a massive RBI double that was just under the top of the outfield fence. Izzy Owen grounded out to shortstop but advanced Shafer to third who was able to score when Shelby Weeks singled down the right field line.
Seattle U would hit a homerun to reclaim the lead in the third.
The Beavers wouldn't stay behind long as Owen and Rader started the top of the fourth off with singles. Owen would score when Sara Lillie came in to pinch hit for Jessica Garcia and singled through the right side. Nunes would step up to the plate to hit her third homerun in as many games to score three more runs to allow the Beavers to take a 6-3 lead.
Seattle would score one more in the bottom of the sixth, but the Beavers eventually captured the 6-4 victory.
Senior Meehra Nelson started in the circle for OSU and recorded three strikeouts in 2.1 innings before sophomore Mariah Mazon would come in and strikeout five batters.
GAME TWO vs Missouri
The Beavers and the Tigers would battle back-and-forth each inning of the game.
Oregon State got on base early as both Weeks and Garcia got on base to lead off the first inning. Hammoude would sac-fly to left field that would allow Weeks to score giving the Beavers a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers would strike back in the bottom of the second with one run.
Garcia would get on in the top of the third off a fielder's choice and then steal second. Nunes would single to center field that allowed Garcia to score, making it 2-1 in favor of the Beavers.
Missouri scored off a wild pitch and sac-fly to even it at 2-2.
Weeks would get on base in the top of the fifth. Nunes came in clutch with a RBI double to center field.
Oregon State would attempt to keep the Tigers from scoring with a double play from Mazon to Nunes to Hammoude in the bottom of the fifth, but Missouri's next batter would hit a homerun to even it at three all.
Both teams would go scoreless in the sixth and seventh inning to take the game to extra innings.
Garcia would start at second base in the top of the eighth to follow international tie-breaker rules. Hammoude would step up to the plate with one on and one out and hit a RBI single.
Two strikeouts from Mazon and an unassisted out for Hammoude in the bottom of the eighth would keep Mizzou from scoring, giving OSU the 4-3 win.
Mazon finished with game with nine strikeouts, while Nunes led the offense with two hits.
The Beavers will conclude action at the Kajikawa Classic tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. PT. against Western Michigan.
