Nunes Homers Twice as Beavers Win Two on Opening Day

OSU beats CSUN, 8-0 and Weber State, 4-3.
Tempe, Ariz. –Oregon State University softball program opened up the 2019 season on Friday with two wins at the Kajikawa Classic.
GAME ONE vs CSUN
Oregon State wasted no time with senior Shelby Weeks hitting a single through to the left field. Three batters later, freshman Frankie Hammoude sailed one over the left field fence for a homerun during her first at-bat in the Orange and Black, securing a 2-0 lead.
The very next inning the Beavers decided to do the same thing again as senior Jessica Garcia singled up the middle. Sophomore Missy Nunes stepped up to the plate to drill one over the right field fence to extend the Beavers lead to 4-0. Hammoude walked. Senior Lovie Lopez came in to pinch run for her and stole second base. Camryn Ybarra advanced her along to third before Chance Burden would earn the RBI to make it 5-0 in favor of OSU.
Senior Kayleen Shafer started off the bottom of the fourth with a walk. Junior Karla Calderon would come in to pinch run for Shafer as Maia Rader doubles down the left field line advancing Calderon to third. Both were in scoring position as Weeks returned to the plate hitting one that the center fielder misread that led to OSU taking a 7-0 lead.
Oregon State added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to eight-run-rule the Matadors after Garcia got on base with a single, Hammoude walked and Ybarra doubled up the middle. Oregon State claimed the 8-0 win over CSUN.
Sophomore pitcher Mariah Mazon would finish with seven Matador strikeouts.
GAME TWO vs WEBER STATE
About 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one, Oregon State went to battle against Weber State.
Weber State struck first scoring in the top of the first.
Oregon State would even the score in the bottom of the third when Weeks singled to get on base. Weeks would then steal second and move her career stolen bases up to 44, tying for second in OSU history. Weeks would later score from a RBI from Nunes.
The freshmen continued to dominate the day as Hammoude would get on base following Weeks score and freshman catcher Bailey McLaughlin homered to give the Beavers a 3-1 lead.
Nunes would make a repeat of last season by hitting her second home run in as many games in the bottom of the fifth.
Weber State would add one run in the sixth and another in the seventh, but Oregon State would eventually take the win, 4-3.
Senior pitcher Meehra Nelson would come in the top of the third and finish with 11 strikeouts.
The Beavers will take on Seattle on Saturday, February 9, on the Pac-12 Networks starting at 8:30 a.m. PT and will wrap up the day against Missouri at 1:30 p.m. PT.
