Beavers Go 197.450, Set Season-High
February 02, 2019 | Women's Gymnastics
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The No. 20 Oregon State gymnastics team was on fire Saturday when it took on No. 3 UCLA. The Beavers crushed their previous season-high of 196.100, raising the bar to a hefty 197.450 despite falling to the Bruins, who tallied 197.900.
OSU notched season-high scores on each event en route to tying the sixth-highest score in Oregon State history at 197.450.
"We've been focusing on our bubble," head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "Our energy and what can we control? How are we feeling? We had several lineup changes today during warm-ups and we dealt with those things really well."
A crowd of 6,505 – the most fans to attend an OSU gymnastics meet since a 2011 dual against the Bruins - was on hand to witness the top 20 battle.
"That was the biggest crowd I've ever gotten to compete in front of in Gill," senior Mary Jacobsen said. "I was almost in shock during the meet because we got to celebrate our gymnastics with 6,500 people. It was crazy to me. I kept looking out into the crowd and seeing how excited they were and how much they cared about us. It was kind of magical."
Along the way, OSU gymnasts recorded 12 career-highs against the Bruins, including five on the vault alone.
Oregon State got off to a fast start on the vault cross the 49-point threshold for the first time in 2019 to record a 49.275 on the apparatus. Jacobsen nailed her Kazamatsu with a twist to win the event with a 9.95. Madi Dagen and Kaitlyn Yanish each added personal-bests of 9.875 and Lacy Dagen posted a 9.80.
Despite the strong start, OSU trailed after the opening stanza 49.650-49.275. Moving to the bars, the Beavers once again eclipsed the 49-point mark for the first time this season with 49.225. Isis Lowery registered a career-high 9.90 to lead the squad. Jacobsen along with Halli Briscoe and Mariana Colussi-Pelaez all posted routines worthy of scores of 9.875.
OSU trailed 98.950-98.500 at the halfway mark. Madi Dagen tallied a career-high 9.925 on the beam to lead a fantastic beam set by the Beavers, who finished with an event score of 49.350. Maela Lazaro added a 9.90, Lacy Dagen posted a career-high 9.875 and Sabrina Gill scored 9.85 in her first beam appearance of the year.
Still trailing 148.325-147.850 heading into the final rotation, the Beavers took the floor as the sixth-ranked floor team in the country should – with an abundance of confidence. Jacobsen set the tone in the leadoff spot with a 9.875. A few moments later Madi Dagen recorded her third career-high of the day with a 9.925. Savanna Force added a 9.875 to set up Lowery, who registered her own personal-high 9.95. Yanish finished the show with a fabulous routine drawing a 10.0 from one judge and finished with a career-high 9.975 as the Beavers' score of 49.600 on the floor, missed a school-record by just one-tenth.
