Beavers Win Again, Knock Off No. 14 Bears
February 17, 2019 | Women's Gymnastics
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The 12th-ranked Oregon State gymnastics team continued its roll Sunday afternoon topping No. 14 California, 196.950-196.150, in the 14th annual DAM Cancer meet. The Beavers 'hit' 24-for-24 routines against the Bears for the first time this season en route to the victory.
The win moves the Beavers' record to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in Pac-12 competition, while Cal falls to 5-5 overall and 2-4 in conference.
"I'm really proud of this team," head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "They come in each meet and they build a little bit more and more off of each other. They make the most of the experience and their performances from the last meet. They continue to come back each week looking for the takeaways for what can we improve upon and what did we do well."
"We had a lot of different distractions throughout the meet with the flash photography at the beginning of the meet to Cal's injury. It was nice that our team wanted to support their team in the moment, we've been there too, but we didn't let it divert the focus on what we needed to do today."
The Beavers got out to a solid start scoring 49.125 on the vault, eclipsing the 49-point mark on the event for the third straight week. Senior Mary Jacobsen tied for the event title with a score of 9.875 and Madi Dagen and Kaitlyn Yanish each added scores of 9.85.
Despite the swift start, OSU trailed after the first frame 49.200-49.125. However, the Beavers' bars lineup matched Cal's effort on the apparatus with Mariana Colussi-Pelaez leading the way tying for the meet-high with a 9.875. Isis Lowery scored 9.85 and Halli Briscoe and Sabrina Gill each chipped in scores of 9.825.
Oregon State entered the second half of the meet with a slim lead at 98.325-98.300 moving to the beam. OSU tied its season-best mark on the event with a team score of 49.350 as Lacy Dagen set a career-high with a 9.90 and Maela Lazaro matched her to tie for the event title. Madi Dagen and Gill each tallied scores of 9.875 and Colussi-Pelaez added a 9.80 in her first beam routine of the season.
Finishing on the floor exercise, where the Beavers are ranked fifth in the nation, OSU had moved out to a 147.675-147.050 lead. Yanish closed the meet with a 9.95 winning the event, marking the fourth straight meet in which she has scored 9.90 or better. Lowery scored 9.875 on the floor and Madi Dagen went for a 9.85 as well.
The Beavers go on the road, returning to the desert to face Arizona State, on Friday, Feb. 22 in Tempe.
