Oregon State notches 20-win season
BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 7 Oregon State women's basketball team earned an 82-74 road win over California Sunday afternoon in Berkeley, Calif.
"I'm proud of our team for bouncing back the way they did today," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "This is a tough place to play and a tough opponent. I was proud of our team for being resilient. I thought we played with great grit and toughness. We had great performances across the board.."
Redshirt-sophomore Destiny Slocum went over 20 points for the fourth-straight game, putting up 26 points on 12-for-19 shooting to go with four rebounds and four assists.
Junior Mikayla Pivec scored 16 points and pulled down eight rebounds, as she moves within four points of 1,000 for her career. Sophomore Aleah Goodman put up 17 points on 5-for-10 shooting and dished out five assists. Freshman Patricia Morris matched a career-high with seven points.
Oregon State shot 51.7 percent from the floor and held Cal to 41.7 percent shooting. The Beavers out-scored the Golden Bears 46-24 on points in the paint.
Cal scored the first five points of the game, but the Beavers responded with a 9-0 run to take the lead. The Golden Bears would battle back from there to take a 20-15 edge into the second quarter.
Oregon State fell behind by double-figures in the second quarter. The Beavers used a 7-0 run to cut the advantage to four late in the period, before heading to the break down 37-35.
The Beavers wasted little time retaking the lead in the second half, as Taya Corosdale knocked down a triple on the team's first possession to put OSU in front. The teams went back and forth from there, until the Beavers exploded for 10 unanswered points to create some separation. OSU headed to the closing frame up 59-51.
The two sides traded punches in the fourth quarter. Cal got within two with four minutes left, but the Beavers would not let them get any closer, as Oregon State closed out the eight-point win.
Oregon State will return to the Beaver State this week for a pair of Civil War matchups. The series will open Friday evening in Eugene.
