Beavers drop defensive battle against Huskies, 19-7
November 08, 2019 | Football
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Despite a stellar defensive outing including two interceptions and four tackles for loss, Oregon State ultimately fell to Washington, 19-7, in a Pac-12 matchup on Friday night inside Reser Stadium.
Redshirt senior quarterback Jake Luton accounted for 88 yards on 19-of-28 passing while Jermar Jefferson and Artavis Pierce combined for 80 yards on the ground. Junior Isaiah Hodgins turned in 77 yards receiving on four receptions.
The Beavers struggled to find an offensive rhythm in a defensive-heavy first half and headed into the locker room trailing 10-0 as the two teams combined for only 103 yards in the opening stanza.
Despite a timely interception by sophomore defensive back Nahshon Wright with 10 minutes remaining in the first half, the Beavers couldn't find the end zone but did hold Washington kicker Peyton Henry to his first missed field goal of the season to avoid a deeper hole going into the break. The Huskies used an early field goal and a short rush from tailback Salvon Ahmed to take the lead into the locker room.
The Beavers got on the board in the second half as sophomore defensive back Jaydon Grant raced past the Husky sideline for a 36-yard interception return and Oregon State's first pick-six of the season with 7:01 remaining in the third quarter. With much-needed momentum on their side and a buzzing Reser Stadium on its feet, the Beavers still trailed 13-7.
Washington wasted little time responding, however, as Jacob Eason found Salvon Amed on a 60-yard pass for his second score of the night to regain momentum, 19-7. Washington would fail on the two-point attempt but would still hold on to provide the final score.
The Beaver defense came up big once again at the start of the fourth quarter as they stopped the Huskies on a fourth-and-one attempt to take over at their own 44 but couldn't piece together a scoring opportunity to help their troubles.
Freshman Omar Speights continued his tear on the defensive end as the reigning Pac-12 Freshman of the Week tallied 18 tackles including nine solo stops and a tackle and a half for a loss. His performance moved him into the all-time list for tackles in a game as he is now tied for ninth with 18. Avery Roberts added 11 tackles of his own with five solo stops.
