Team Black Carries the Night at Orange & Black Exhibition
November 22, 2019 | Women's Gymnastics
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State gymnastics team hosted its annual Orange & Black Exhibition Friday evening at Gill Coliseum. Several hundred fans were on hand to get their first glimpse of the 2020 gymnastics team.
"Tonight was exactly what we needed. It is so great to get the team into Gill to work in front of our fans," head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "We got a lot of experience out of what we did tonight with nineteen gymnasts getting to perform in a fantastic environment."
"I'm very pleased with what our freshmen showed tonight. Kayla (Bird) and Jenna (Domingo) did a wonderful job in front of a much larger crowd than they are accustomed."
Two gymnasts – Kayla Bird and Lena Greene - performed in the all-around while five others appeared on three events including Madi Dagen, Jenna Domingo, Isis Lowery, Kristina Peterson and Kaitlyn Yanish.
In all, 19 out of 20 gymnasts performed in at least one event including two of the Beavers' freshmen who made their Gill Coliseum debuts. The lone exception was freshman Jane Poniewaz, who will miss the season due to injury.
The exhibition featured pairings of head-to-head matchups on each event. The crowd and guest judges then decided which had performed the best routine by indicating the winner with an orange and black card.
For those keeping score, Team Black defeated Team Orange 12-7 including Greene recording wins on three events. Kristina Peterson and Kaitlyn Yanish added a pair of wins for Team Black. Lexie Gonzales and Isis Lowery led the Orange squad with two wins apiece.
The annual exhibition is free event for fans providing the first public look at the 2020 Beavers at Gill Coliseum. As has become custom for OSU gymnastics meets, the exhibition ended with a dance party for children from the crowd joining the gymnasts on the floor and then autographs by the entire gymnastics team.
Among the guest judges were OSU men's basketball star Tres Tinkle, head baseball coach Mitch Canham, assistant baseball coach Rich Dorman, assistant women's golf coach Kelly Kerkvliet, assistant women's soccer coaches Jenny Ruiz-Williams and Nick Stirrett and OSU strength and conditioning coaches Izzy Batayola and Michael Johnson. In addition, Steve Gress, of the Corvallis Gazette-Times, and Jon Warren and Josh Worden from KEJO Joe Radio (AM 1240) as well as Sean Arey, the golf pro at Trysting Tree Golf Course helped judge the exhibition.
The Beavers' season opens Jan. 3 when they travel to Lake Buena Vista, Fla. to take on Georgia and Iowa at the Critique Classic. OSU returns to Gill to host i's home opener against Seattle Pacific and Centenary on Saturday, Jan. 11.
