Beavers Finish Second to Open the Season at Critique Classic

Gill wins uneven bars event title
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – The Oregon State gymnastics team, ranked No. 11 in the preseason coaches' poll, earned a second-place finish at the season-opening Critique Classic Friday evening. The Beavers, who scored 194.450, defeated Iowa (192.700) and Bridgeport (189.300) while falling to No. 8 Georgia (195.100) to kick off the season with a 2-1 record.

Sabrina Gill won the event title on the uneven bars and Kaitlyn Yanish finished second on the floor exercise.

The Beavers posted the top team score on the uneven bars (48.600) and tied for second on the balance beam (48.700).

"I'm so proud of this team and their ability to get the job done," associate head coach Michael Chaplin said. "We've had some adversity this week and they maintained their focus. Tonight was a solid start to the 2020 season and we look forward to being back in Gill Coliseum next weekend."

The Beavers, who began the meet on the vault, established themselves in second place scoring 48.450 in the opening rotation. Lacy Dagen led the squad with a 9.80 and Madi Dagen added a score of 9.750.Â

OSU solidified itself in second on the uneven bars posting a meet-best 48.600 on the event. Gill notched the meet's best score with a 9.80 and Alyssa Minyard tied for second with a 9.775. Isis Lowery added a 9.750 for the Beavers.

Oregon State closed the gap on Georgia in the third rotation scoring 48.700 on the balance beam. Madi Dagen scored a team-high 9.850 and Lacy Dagen registered a score of 9.800 and Lowery tallied a 9.80.

On the floor exercise, Yanish notched a team-leading 9.875 and Lowery scored 9.80. Madi Dagen posted a score of 9.750 and Niya Mack turned in a 9.725.

Freshman Kayla Bird performed as the Beavers' lone all-around in her Oregon State debut scoring 38.325 to take second place in the meet and fellow freshman Jenna Domingo performed in exhibitions on the uneven bars and balance beam. In addition, senior Alyssa Minyard returned to the bars lineup after missing the entire 2019 season due to injury scoring 9.775 to post the meet's second-highest score.

Head coach Tanya Chaplin did not make the trip to Florida due to health-related issues. Associate head coach Michael Chaplin directed the team at the Critique Classic.

Oregon State returns to Corvallis next week to host Seattle Pacific and Centenary in the Beavers' home opener Saturday, Jan. 11 at 1 p.m.
