Oregon State Set to Begin Season at Head of the Charles
October 17, 2019 | Men's Rowing
Beavers will have a boat compete in the event for the fourth consecutive season
CORVALLIS – The Oregon State men's rowing team is set to open the 2019 fall season at the 55th annual Head of the Charles Regatta in Cambridge, Mass.
This will be the fourth consecutive trip for the Beavers after receiving automatic bids for the 4+ in each of the last three seasons.
"We've gotten an automatic bid for our 4+ for the last 3 years. in this tight field, that's hard to do. To do it again this year is going to be difficult but it's definitely achievable," said Beaver head coach Gabe Winkler. "It's fun to race against the best rowers in the world and this is one regatta where that happens."
The Head of the Charles is the largest rowing event in the world with over 400,000 spectators during race weekend. The weekend gives the smaller group of Beavers attending a chance to bond, as well as place them in a position to prove what they can accomplish according to Beaver senior coxswain Ben Garrison.
"Just to race against the level of competition there is really special," Garrison said. "I consider Boston the Mecca of rowing, especially in the United States, and we want to show the hard work we put in over the summer. We've got a lot of dedicated and talented people over here and we're excited to show it."
Garrison will cox the 4+ manned by freshman Adam Montoya, sophomore Jacoby Wilson, junior Max McDonald, and senior Roman Pjajka. This will be Garrison and Pjajka's third year at the event for the Beavers and McDonald's second.
"The weather looks to be perfect this weekend. This means there could be 200,000+ people on the banks of the Charles making noise, cheering on their teams," Winkler said. "That's a lot of energy and that's what makes this race so special."
The three-mile head-race course runs upstream on the Charles River from the Boston University Boathouse to Christian Herter Park.
Oregon State will be racing on Sunday in the Men's Champ 4+, set to start at 1:45 PM Eastern. You can follow along all weekend long on the livestream, and all results can be found here.
