Oregon State hit the floor in Gill as they push towards their season-opener on Nov. 9
CORVALLIS – The Oregon State women's basketball team opened practice for the 2019-20 season Tuesday, as the team took the floor at Gill Coliseum ready for another outstanding campaign.
Â
"It was fun to be back out here," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "It's been about a month since we were in Italy, and now our season is beginning. There was a lot of consistency there, and this team competes like crazy. There were a lot of great moments today."
Â
The Beavers return four starters from last year's squad, including All-Pac-12 honorees Destiny Slocum and Mikayla Pivec. Pivec was named a Preseason All-America First Team honoree by Athlon, while Slocum made Lindy's Sports' Preseason All-America Third Team. The squad also brings back Pac-12 Sixth Player of the Year Aleah Goodman, who averaged over 10 points per game in 2018-19.
Â
"Having the opportunity to practice in Gill for the first time was really exciting," Goodman said. "The team looked really good. This was definitely our best first-practice since I've been here, so I'm really looking forward to the season we have ahead."
Â
Taya Corosdale started 33 games last season, and averaged nearly a double-double during Oregon State's postseason run. Pivec, Kat Tudor, Janessa Thropay and Maddie Washington make up an experienced senior class that has helped continue the winning tradition at OSU.
Â
Jasmine Simmons was a standout performer for the Beavers during their four games in Italy this summer, and will look to continue that momentum into the upcoming campaign. Fellow sophomore Patricia Morris also played important minutes during the summer tour.
Â
Four newcomers have joined the Beavers this season, as redshirt-freshman Noelle Mannen will play alongside true-freshmen Kennedy Brown, Taylor Jones and Jelena Mitrovic. Oregon State was able to integrate all four of them into the group during their Italy trip, as they prepared for the upcoming season.
Â
The Beavers' 2019-20 schedule has been announced, and is available here.
Â
Oregon State is one of the most successful programs in the last decade of the sport. The Beavers have appeared in every WBCA Coaches' Poll since the end of the 2013-14 season. Four returning starters and nine overall letterwinners return from last year's team that went 26-8, advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth straight year, and played in the Sweet 16 for the fourth consecutive season. ESPNW has tabbed the Beavers No. 6 in its "Way Too Early" rankings the 2019-20 season.
