Abel, Rutschman, Fehmel and Mulholland have been honored for a second time
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State pitcher Kevin Abel and catcher Adley Rutschman have been named First-Team Preseason All-Americans by Perfect Game USA, the online publication announced Tuesday. Pitcher Bryce Fehmel has been selected second team and pitcher Jake Mulholland has been recognized on the third team.
All four have now been recognized twice leading up to the 2019 season as Collegiate Baseball released its preseason All-America team in December.
The Beavers are the only team with two first-team selections by Perfect Game and are tied with Arkansas at four overall.
Rutschman, a junior in 2019, earned preseason honors after batting .408 with a school-record 102 hits and 83 runs batted in last season. He hit nine home runs, tallied 22 doubles and walked 53 times. The Sherwood, Ore., native was selected as the projected preseason player of the year by Collegiate Baseball in December.
Abel, meanwhile, became the first pitcher to win four games at the College World Series, claiming the last victory thanks to a two-hit shutout of Arkansas in the championship finale. The San Diego native ended the year 8-1 overall with a 2.88 earned run average in 23 games. He was the only freshman in the nation with more than 100 strikeouts, tallying 108.
Fehmel, a senior in 2019, went 10-1 in 2018, posting a 3.19 ERA in 20 games, all starts. He issued just 27 walks in 113 innings. From Agoura Hills, Calif., his 26 career wins tie him for 10th all-time at OSU and his .839 winning percentage (26-5) ranks fourth.
Mulholland, a junior in 2019, saved 16 games last season, tying for the Pac-12 Conference lead. He finished the season 2-2 with a 2.20 ERA, striking out 42 to just 11 walks in 42 innings. Mulholland, who hails from Snohomish, Wash., is at 22 career saves entering the season in a tie for third in a career at Oregon State.
Fehmel (marketing), Mulholland (business administration) and Rutschman (finance) all earned Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention honors last season. Abel (speech communication) was not eligible due to being in his first year at Oregon State.
