Beavers Knock Off No. 7 Kentucky in Season-Opener

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Oregon State gymnastics team, ranked No. 17 in the preseason coaches' poll, won its season-opener knocking off No. 7 Kentucky in a quad meet at Illinois Sunday afternoon. The Beavers, who scored 195.225, also defeating Lindenwood to get the season started with a 3-0 record.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Yanish performed in the all-around for the first time in her career scoring 38.850 to tie for third in the meet. Fellow sophomore Savanna Force posted the Beavers' top score in the meet earning a 9.875 on the floor exercise to finish second on the event.
The Beavers hit 23 out of 24 routines and secured the top team scores on balance beam (48.975) and floor (49.025).
"It was a good start for us and we obviously have a lot of room for improvement," head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "The positives we'll take away are the fight we showed throughout and we need to work on relaxing through to the end of our routines to the finish. We can clean up our landings but they were being aggressive trying to stick their dismounts."
The Beavers, who began the meet on the uneven bars, was in third place after the opening rotation scoring 48.450 while Kentucky led with a score of 48.825. Halli Briscoe led OSU with 9.825 and Isis Lowery scored 9.750 in her first career bars routine.
OSU began a comeback in the second rotation moving past Kentucky to reach the halfway point in second and trailing the Illini 97.475-97.425. Lowery, Madi Dagen and Maela Lazaro each tallied scores of 9.825 to lead the way.
Oregon State took the lead from Illinois on the floor in the third set going up, 146.450-146.175. Force notched her 9.875 to lead the charge with Lowery adding a 9.85 and Mary Jacobsen scoring 9.80.
Finishing on the vault, OSU held off the Illini's comeback attempt on the floor to secure the win, 195.225-195.175. Yanish, Jacobsen and Madi Dagen each stuck their vaults to post matching scores of 9.80.
Producing personal-bests were Madi Dagen (9.800), Lacy Dagen (9.700) and Lexie Gonzales (9.675) on vault, Lowery (9.750) and Yanish (9.650) on bars, Lowery (9.825), Madi Dagen (9.825) and Kristina Peterson (9.725) on beam and on floor, Madi Dagen (9.525).
Four OSU gymnasts – freshmen Madi Dagen (vault, beam and floor) and Peterson (beam), as well as sophomore Gonzales (vault), and junior Lacy Dagen (vault) – combined to perform six routines in their Oregon State debuts on Sunday.
Oregon State returns to Corvallis next week to host Utah in the Beavers' home opener Saturday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m.
