Heimlich, Beavers Shut Out USC
May 18, 2018 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – Luke Heimlich struck out 14 for the second consecutive week to send No. 2 Oregon State to a 4-0 series-opening win over USC Friday night at Dedeaux Field.
Heimlich struck out at least one batter in every inning but the seventh and tossed 8 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up his 13th win of the season, which leads the nation.
He struck out nine straight during a stretch from the first through fourth innings, and did not allow a baserunner until Kaleb Murphy singled in the sixth. Heimlich left the game with two on in the ninth, giving way to Jake Mulholland, who got a 6-4-3 double play to end the game, earning his 14th save.
Kyle Nobach set a career-high with four hits to pace the Beavers, who recorded 11 as a team. He doubled in the second, and singled in the fourth, seventh and eighth innings. The redshirt senior drove in one, in the second, and scored two runs.
Nobach's second-inning double opened the game's scoring, and he brought home Oregon State's second run that inning on a squeeze bunt by Steven Kwan.
Oregon State (41-8-1 overall, 17-7-1 Pac-12 Conference) put two more on the board in the seventh inning thanks to a single from Zak Taylor and double by Nick Madrigal.
Kyle Hurt started for USC (24-24, 11-17) and was charged with the loss after allowing 10 hits and four runs in seven innings. The right-hander dropped to 4-5 on the year.
