Beavers Split Double Header with Arizona State
April 06, 2018 | Softball
CORVALLIS – Led by a four-RBI performance from freshman Hope Brandner, No. 25 Oregon State University softball split a double header with No. 7 Arizona State on Friday inside OSU Softball Complex. The Sun Devils won game one 10-1, before the Beavers took game two 4-2.
Oregon State improves to 21-16 overall and 4-7 in Pac-12 play. Meanwhile, Arizona State falls to 32-5 overall and 6-2 in conference action.
Game 1 | ASU 10, OSU 1
Oregon State fell behind early in game one where they faced Arizona State's ace in the circle G Juarez.
The Sun Devils put up three runs in the first, one run in the third, four runs in the fourth and two in the fifth.
McKenna Arriola hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to erase the shutout. Arriola, Chance Burden, and Shelby Weeks each had one hit.
Meehra Nelson got the nod for the start going 3.1 innings with three strikeouts. Nerissa Eason came in relief tossing 1.2 innings with one strikeout.
Game 2 | OSU 4, ASU 2
The Beavers had a different idea for game two, jumping on top early scoring a run in the first to put the pressure on the visitors. Weeks led off the inning with a walk, and advanced to second thanks to an Arriola single. First basemen Brandner got her first of four RBI on the day with a single up the middle.
Oregon State added to its lead with a three-run third inning. Much like the first inning Weeks safely reached on a walk. In the next at bat Jessica Garcia singled, and Arriola followed that up with a walk loading the bases.
With the bases loaded, Brandner stepped into the batter's box ripping a single up the middle that went off the shortstops glove allowing the bases to clear for a 4-0 lead.
Arizona State left runners on in the fourth and fifth innings, and broke the shutout in the sixth inning. Danielle Gibson hit a two-run home run that just cleared the wall, bringing the lead to 4-2.
The Sun Devils opened the seventh with a double, but solid defense and a strikeout ended the game.
Brandner led the Beavers with a 2-for-3 performance with four RBI. This was the third time this season the freshman has hit four RBI. Weeks led the way with two runs scored.
Mariah Mazon pitched her 11th complete game of the year with a two run, five hit performance. She finished the game with six strikeouts.
