Heimlich, Beavers Take Game One Versus ASU
April 27, 2018 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Luke Heimlich struck out 11 and held Arizona State to five hits and two runs in 8 2/3 innings to help send fifth-ranked Oregon State to a 6-2 win over the Sun Devils Friday night at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
Heimlich became the Pac-12 Conference's first 10-game winner, outdueling his counterpart, Arizona State's Alec Marsh, who worked seven innings in a loss. Heimlich held ASU scoreless over eight innings, then gave up a pair of runs in the ninth. Spencer Torkelson spoiled Heimlich's shutout bid with a solo home run with one down.
The senior now has three consecutive games with 10 or more strikeouts – a first in his OSU career – and has 33 over his last 22 innings.
By comparison, Marsh was also sharp for ASU (17-24 overall, 9-10 Pac-12), holding the Beavers to five hits and two runs in seven innings. Cadyn Grenier bunted in a run in the third to give OSU (31-6, 11-5) the lead, then watched as Adley Rutschman drove in a run via a single in the sixth.
Marsh, who is now 3-3 on the year, was relieved by Jake Godfrey in the eighth and the Beavers took advantage. Jack Anderson hit a bases-loaded comebacker versus lefty Spencer Van Scoyoc, and an errant throw home run allowed two runs to score. Then Michael Gretler drove home a pair with a double down the third-base line to give the Beavers a 6-0 lead at the time.
Gretler paced the Oregon State offense with two hits.
