Beavers Win Civil War Series Opener
April 19, 2018 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Luke Heimlich struck out 12 to become Oregon State's record holder for career strikeouts and Trevor Larnach and Tyler Malone homered to pace the Beavers to a 5-2 win over Oregon in front of 3,692 fans at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.

The game was the opener of the 2017-18 Civil War Series, presented by PacificSource Health Plans, Spirit Mountain Casino, Safeway-Albertsons and your local Toyota Dealers. The win pushed the Beavers to 27-6 on the year, with an 8-5 record in Pac-12 Conference play. Oregon is 19-16 overall and 6-10 in league games.

Heimlich won his Pac-12 leading ninth win of the season on the strength of 7 1/3 innings, where he held Oregon to four hits and two runs – one earned. He struck out 12, with his seventh, coming in the third inning, breaking Jonah Nickerson's school-record for strikeouts.

Heimlich now has 305 strikeouts in 76 career games. He also has 29 wins, which ranks him third at OSU, behind only Ken Noble (30) and Ben Wetzler (36).

The Beavers opened the game's scoring with RBI singles by Cadyn Grenier in the first and Nick Madrigal in the second. After the Ducks scored one in the third, Larnach launched his 11th home run of the season in the bottom half of the inning. He then watched as Tyler Malone hit his third in as many games – a two-run blast – in the fifth to send Oregon State to a four-run advantage.

Oregon's Matt Mercer allowed five runs on eight hits in five innings. The righty walked three and struck out six, and was charged with the loss to drop to 4-4 on the year.

Jake Mulholland worked a scoreless ninth for his 10th save of the season.

Earlier Thursday
OSU starter Luke Heimlich was named to the College Baseball Hall of Fame's Pitcher of the Year Watch List prior to Thursday's game against Oregon. Cadyn Grenier, meanwhile, was named to the CBF's Brooks Wallace Award Watch List, which is given annually to the nation's top college shortstop.

Big Crowd At Goss
The 3,692 in attendance marked the third-largest crowd in the Goss Stadium era, and the largest during the regular season. It trails only the two games at the 2017 Corvallis Super Regional versus Vanderbilt: 3,737 on June 9, and 3,734 the following day.

Teammates
The last player to hit a home run in three consecutive days prior to Tyler Malone, who hit a two-run shot on Thursday? Try teammate Trevor Larnach, who homered against New Mexico, Gonzaga and Cal Poly from Feb. 16-18 this season.

Equaling 2017
Home runs by Trevor Larnach and Tyler Malone pushed the Beavers to 31 as a team through the first 33 games of the season. That equals the 2017 Beavers, who finished with 31 in 62 games.

To No. 8
Jake Mulholland's 10th save of the season moved him into a tie for eighth with Scott Schultz (2013) for the most in a single-season at Oregon State. He's one shy of sixth, which is held by Mitch Hickey (2015) and Max Engelbrekt (2016), who both had 11.
