Oregon State Edged In Series Opener
March 09, 2018 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State overcame a two-run deficit late but dropped a 5-3 decision to Cal State Fullerton Friday night at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field to open a three-game series with the Titans.
Adley Rutschman hit his first home run of the season in the sixth inning, then watched as Andy Armstrong drove home the tying run on a double to left in the seventh.
The tie, however, did not last long as Cal State Fullerton's Sahid Valenzuela and Ruban Cardenas each drove in solo runs in the ninth to send the Beavers to their first loss this season. Oregon State dropped to 13-1 while Cal State Fullerton improved to 4-8.
Armstrong and Trevor Larnach each tallied two hits to pace the Beavers offensively. Larnach drove home a run via a double in the third, then doubled again in the eighth but was stranded in scoring position.
Neither starter picked up a decision. Oregon State's Luke Heimlich allowed three hits and three runs – one earned – with nine strikeouts in six innings. Cal State Fullerton's Colton Eastman, meanwhile, allowed five hits and three runs in seven innings. He struck out eight.
Tommy Wilson tossed a scoreless eighth for the Titans to improve to 2-0, with Brett Conine earning his second save after allowing one baserunner – an infield single by Armstrong – in the ninth.
Brandon Eisert, who came on in relief in the seventh, was charged with the loss, dropping to 2-1 on the year. He allowed two hits and two runs – one earned – in 2 1/3 innings.
The loss snapped Oregon State's 22-game home winning streak, which, entering the day, was the longest in the nation. The Beavers also came into the ballgame as one of just four teams nationally without a loss.
