Beavers Sweep Day One of Kajikawa Classic

Meehra Nelson takes the win, Missy Nunes skies second home run of the day
TEMPE, Ariz. – Junior Meehra Nelson (Simi Valley, Calif.) threw seven innings of one-run ball and freshman Missy Nunes (Livermore, Calif.) hit her second home run in as many games as the Oregon State softball program took the day one sweep in the Kajikawa Classic with a 4-1 decision over Indiana.
"It's a good day to be a Beaver," said head coach Laura Berg. "The game started off a little slow but the team stuck with it and made the adjustments we needed them to make."
Nelson (1-0) went the distance and struckout six, allowing only five hits and issuing two walks, while Nunes skied her lone hit over the centerfield wall to lead off the sixth inning for the Beavers (2-0).
The Hoosiers (0-2) were on the board first in the top of the second after Taylor Uden laced a leadoff triple into right field and scored on a bloop single from Annika Baez, but the rally was cut short after Rachel O'Malley lined into a double play as senior McKenna Arriola (West Hills, Calif.) snatched the line drive and cut down Baez back at first.
Most of the action took place in the bottom of the fifth as freshman Chance Burden (Huntington Beach, Calif.) led off with a high-chopper single over the third baseman and advanced to second after baiting the throw from the outfield.
Arriola drove in Burden on a standup double down the left field line to knot the score at one apiece. Burden advanced to third during the at-bat after Tara Trainer (0-1) threw her first wild pitch of the inning.
Arriola advanced to third following another wild pitch from Trainer and scored on a sacrifice fly from junior Shelby Weeks (Tracy, Calif.) in foul territory deep into left field, while a crazy string of events eventually led to a third run in the inning.
Freshman Camryn Ybarra (Mission Viejo, Calif.) started the sequence with a single back up the middle and ended up on second after Trainer tossed her third wild pitch during senior Alysha Everett's (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) at-bat.
Everett sent the fifth pitch she saw on a quick hop to Katie Lacefield at third base and Lacefield bobbled the initial look before gathering the ball and making a tag attempt on Ybarra, who was advancing on the play.
Ybarra's hard slide knocked the ball out of Lacefield's glove and into out-of-bounds territory and the umpire crew awarded Ybarra home while Everett moved up to second.
The 3-1 score held firm until Nunes' homer in the sixth inning.
The Beavers are back in action on Saturday, February 10, when they take on No. 22/19 BYU at Tempe Sports Complex Field 1 with first pitch scheduled for 8:15 a.m. PT. Oregon State will wrap up day two with a contest against No. 25/25 Georgia broadcasting live on the Pac-12 Networks starting at 4 p.m. PT.
