Oregon State topples second ranked foe in as many days
"I thought our kids were relentless," said head coach Laura Berg. "Every time BYU scored we responded with runs of our own, so it was great to see them do that.
"This was a great confidence booster to know they can respond."
The Cougars (1-4) smacked five home runs in the contest to the Beavers' (3-0) two, but Oregon State responded with a deluge of hits as everyone in the starting lineup ended up on base.
Freshman Hope Brandner (Vacaville, Calif.) got OSU on the board first at the start of the game as her first-inning liner into left field scored senior McKenna Arriola (West Hills, Calif.) for a 1-0 lead.
BYU knotted the score at one apiece in the bottom of the first after Lexi Tarrow scored on a single into left from Libby Sugg.
Oregon State tacked on two more runs in the second after junior Jessica Garcia (Hughson, Calif.) roped a double into left center, scoring freshman Chance Burden (Huntington Beach, Calif.), while Arriola snuck a diving liner into left to score Garcia shortly after.
OSU opened up the floodgates in the third inning as six straight Beavers reached base after Brandner started the rally with a one-out single into left.
Senior Alysha Everett (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) followed up with a ground-rule double to left center and freshman Missy Nunes (Livermore, Calif.) got the runs flowing after reaching on an error, scoring Brandner.
Sophomore Fallon Molnar (Cayucos, Calif.) laced a pinch-hit single to right center, scoring Everett, as Burden added a deep double to left center to move Nunes across the plate.
Garcia added the cherry on top with her single back up the middle to cap Molnar and set the line score at 8-1 heading into the bottom of the third.
The Cougars got their first of five home runs in the bottom half of the frame as Caitlyn Alldredge curved her fly ball inside the left field foul pole to cut Oregon State's lead to 8-3.
Everett responded in kind with her first home run of the season in the top of the fourth, pulling a pitch from Autumn Moffat down the right field line for a 9-3 line score, while junior Kayleen Shafer (Mission Viejo, Calif.) sent a double down the left field line to score Nunes later in the frame.
BYU added a pair of home runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 10-7, but the Beavers responded in the fifth when Arriola raced across home following freshman Camryn Ybarra (Mission Viejo, Calif.) reaching on an error, while Brandner skied her first career home run to left center to put the lead back at 13-7.
The Cougars added two more home runs, one in the fifth and another in the seventh inning, but Oregon State's lead was too great to overcome as the Beavers took their second win over a ranked foe in the classic at 14-9.
In total, OSU had 19 hits as a team with Garcia (4-for-4), Arriola (3-for-4), Brandner (3-for-5), Nunes (2-for-4) and Everett (2-for-5) all finishing with a multi-hit game. Junior Meehra Nelson (Simi Valley, Calif.) took the win after coming in relief of sophomore Nerissa Eason (Grass Valley, Calif.) in the fourth inning.
The Beavers will wrap up the second day of the Kajikawa Classic against No. 25/25 Georgia at Farrington Stadium starting at 5 p.m. MT. The game will broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks with Anne Marie Anderson and Amanda Freed on the call.
