Beavers suffer first loss of 2018
TEMPE, Ariz. – The Oregon State University softball program suffered its first loss of the 2018 campaign on Saturday night after No. 25/25 Georgia got a gem from its starting pitcher for a 7-0 decision at Farrington Stadium.
"It was a tough loss," said head coach Laura Berg. "We didn't do a very good job of competing, but it's time to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and show up to compete against the other SEC school that we have to face."
The Bulldogs (4-1) got a complete game shutout from Brittany Gray (3-0) as she struck out 10, while the Beavers (3-1) were limited to four hits scattered across seven innings.
Georgia opened up the first inning with three runs as Alysen Febrey drove her RBI single into right field to score Justice Milz, while Kendal Burton sent a two-out, two-run liner into left for a 3-0 lead.
The Dawgs got one more run in the top of the second when Alyssa DiCarlo roped a double down the left field line, scoring Milz, but was cut down at third following the 7-6-2-5 relay.
Freshman Mariah Mazon (Tulare, Calif.) (1-1) settled into a rhythm to keep Georgia off the board through the next three innings, but the Beavers were held to two hits by the fifth. Freshman Hope Brandner (Vacaville, Calif.) bounced a single back up the middle in the bottom of the first, while junior Jessica Garcia (Hughson, Calif.) beat the throw from second base on a soft ground ball in the bottom of the third.
The Bulldogs added two more runs in the top of the sixth before a solo shot from Febrey in the top of the seventh capped off the scoring for the night.
Oregon State will wrap up the 2018 Kajikawa Classic with a contest against No. RV/RV Missouri on Sunday, February 11, at 8 a.m. PT. The contest will broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks with Ann Schatz and Barb Jordan on the call.
