Beavers Fall to No. 20 Cougars on the Palouse
November 21, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
PULLMAN, Wash. – The Oregon State volleyball team, which has been riddled with injuries this fall, struggled Wednesday evening against No. 20 Washington State falling in three sets.
The Beavers lost by scores of 25-15, 25-9 and 25-18 to fall to 11-20 overall and 1-18 in the Pac-12. The Cougars improved to 20-9, 11-8.
OSU, which dealt with travel problems on Tuesday that included a four-hour flight delay followed by a cancelled connecting flight and eventually a long, evening bus trip from Eugene to Pullman, struggled throughout against the Cougars. The Beavers stayed close trailing 11-9 in the first set before Washington State went on an 8-1 run to push the lead to 19-10. OSU answered with three straight points on an ace by Maddy Gravley and a kill from Maddie Sheehan but it wasn't enough to stem the tide. WSU went on to take the set, 25-15.
Washington State quickly took charge of the second set using a 7-1 run to start the period forcing OSU's first timeout. The Cougars continued to be aggressive increasing their lead to 18-4. WSU took the second set, 25-9.
Oregon State, again, fell behind early in the third set, 8-3, but continued to fight working to stay in contact with the Cougars. A pair of kills by Gravley and one from Maddie Goings closed the lead to 9-6, but OSU would get no closer. The Beavers put together a 5-2 run late in the set with kills by Lindsey Schell, Daniela Vargas and Amy Underdown, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars secured the set, 25-18, and the match.
Game Notes: Redshirt freshman middle blocker Lindsey Schell led the OSU offense with nine kills … Grace Massey registered a team-best 11 digs.
Next Up: The Beavers return to Gill Coliseum to close the 2018 season when they host Oregon in the Civil War, brought to you by PacificSource Health Plans, Spirit Mountain Casino, Safeway/Albertsons, Your Local Toyota Dealers and First Interstate Bank, on Saturday at 7 p.m.
