Beavers Saddened by Passing of Sally Hunter
November 16, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
Sally Hunter, the first volleyball coach in Oregon State history, passed away on November 10.
Â
Hunter led the Beavers to a 61-17 record over four seasons from 1967-71, posting the highest winning percentage in OSU history at .782.
Â
After creating OSU's volleyball program, Hunter quickly built it into a regional power and a national force. The 1969-70 team captured the Pacific Northwest Tourney and won its first 21 matches. The team would finish 23-3 making it to the "Sweet 16" of the first-ever National Intercollegiate Volleyball Tournament.
Â
The following season, the 1970-71 team gained momentum late in the year rolling to the "Elite Eight," going 5-1 in the postseason for an overall mark of 22-8.
Â
Last month, Hunter along with her 1969-70 and 1970-71 teams were inducted to the Oregon State Athletics Hall of Fame.
Â
As a professor at Oregon State, she also coached track and field to the 1968 Pacific Northwest Championships, led the women's basketball team to an undefeated season in 1969, and also coached the softball team.
The volleyball program will honor before Friday's match with a moment of silence.
