Beavers Fall to No. 23 Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Oregon State volleyball team fell to No. 23 Arizona Friday night to open the second half of Pac-12 play.
With the loss, the Beavers' record drops to 10-12, 0-11 in the Pac-12, while Arizona improves to 17-6, 6-5. Set scores were 25-15, 25-16 and 25-17.
Four OSU attackers – Haylie Bennett, Maddie Goings, Maddy Gravley and Lindsey Schell - tied for the team-lead with six kills each. Grace Massey collected 15 digs and Gravley led the squad with two blocks.
The Beavers and Wildcats began the match trading points, but a six point burst by Arizona made it 9-2 quickly. OSU used a 4-1 run that included kills by Maddie Goings, Haylie Bennett and Amy Underdown, midway through the set to close the gap to 14-10. But the Beavers couldn't sustain their run dropping the set, 25-15.
In the second set, Arizona again seized an early lead at 9-6. Aces by Allison Hughes and Goings worked to close the gap to 10-9. The Wildcats moved out to a 12-7 lead, but the Beavers responded with a couple points before Arizona posted in four in a row to extend the lead to 21-14. UA continued to press the Beavers taking the second set, 25-16.
Oregon State got behind early 2-0, but didn't allow Arizona to pull away responding with a 4-1 run to take the lead 4-3 behind kills by Underdown and Gravley. The teams traded sideouts and the score was still tied 9-9 until the Wildcats used a short run to open a lead at 14-10. The Beavers fought back with a 4-1 run that included three kills by Schell to close the gap to 19-17 but Arizona scored the final six points to take the set, 25-17, and the match.
Game Notes: Four Beavers – Haylie Bennett, Maddie Goings, Maddy Gravley and Lindsey Schell – tied for the team-lead with six kills apiece … Grace Massey led the OSU defense with 15 digs … Allison Hughes recorded the first service ace of her OSU career.
Next Up: Oregon State remains on the road traveling up the road to Tempe to take on Arizona State on Sunday at noon.
