Beavers Knock Off Sun Devils in Tempe
October 28, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
TEMPE, Ariz. – The Oregon State volleyball team beat Arizona State in four sets Sunday afternoon in Tempe, Ariz.
The Beavers, who earned their first Pac-12 win of the season, improved their overall record to 11-13 and 1-11 in Pac-12 play. Set scores were 18-25, 25-21. 25-21 and 25-22.
Amy Underdown registered a match-high 17 kills while Maddie Goings added 10 and Maddy Gravley eight kills. Grace Massey led three Beavers with 16 digs to anchor the back row defense while Gravley and Haylie Bennett led the Beavers with four blocks apiece.
"It's good to get that monkey off the back," head coach Mark Barnard said. "This was a total team effort today. We had a lot of people playing well at the same time, which is something we had been missing."
Oregon State kept the opening set close and the score was tied at 7-7, until ASU used a 6-1 surge to pull away 13-8. The Beavers took four of six points but could never get closer than four points at 17-13. Despite six kills in the set from Amy Underdown, the Sun Devils took the set, 25-18.
In the second set, the Beavers used an ace by Makenna Browne and kills by Maddy Gravley, Maddie Sheehan and Lindsey Schell to keep the score tied at 6-6. OSU used a 7-2 run keyed by Daniela Vargas, who registered a block, an assist and a kill in a short span, to give the Beavers a 15-12 advantage. ASU responded with a 4-1 run, but a block by Lindsey Schell and Haylie Bennett followed by a kill from Underdown put the Beavers up 19-16. OSU went on to roll off four of the final five point including a flurry of three kills by Vargas to secure the set, 25-21, and tie the match at the break.
"We made in-game adjustments better today, especially in blocking. ASU beat us pretty soundly in the first set, but we made some good adjustments and started getting hands on the ball which helped us to get more swings on the ball. Our setters did a good job making a concerted effort to run the middle more as well which opened things up for our hitters too."
OSU took the early lead on a pair of kills by Underdown and Browne's second ace of the match at 4-1. The Sun Devils fought back to take the lead 9-8, but the Beavers answered with a 5-0 run that included three kills by Maddie Goings and a pair of attack errors by ASU to take the lead at 15-11. Arizona State, again, roared by to tie the score at 16-16. Trailing 20-19, the Beavers ripped off six of the final seven points as Underdown found the floor twice and Gravley recorded a pair of blocks to win the set, 25-21.
The fourth set was hotly contested with nine ties early on. Tied at 11-11, the Sun Devils went on a 6-1 run to take the lead at 17-12. But the Beavers continued to fight back and pulled within two following Montanna Gubrud's ace making it 19-17. Gravley's ace made it 21-20 and forced ASU's final timeout. Back-to-back attack errors by the Sun Devils gave the Beavers the lead at 22-21. Goings, Schell and Bennett each recorded kills as the Beavers finished the set on a 7-1 run, to win the set, 25-22, and match.
Game Notes: Amy Underdown tallied a match-high 17 kills and Maddie Goings added 10 … Grace Massey led three Beavers in double figures in digs with 16, while Goings added 13 and Underdown 10 to record doubl-doubles … Haylie Bennett and Maddy Gravley tied for the team-lead with four blocks … Makenna Browne tallied a pair of aces.
Next Up: Oregon State takes on a pair of ranked teams next week when UCLA travels to Corvallis on Friday, Nov. 2, and USC visits on Sunday, Nov. 4.
